³³ Now there was a man in the synagogue who was under the power of the spirit of a foul demon, and he screamed with a loud voice, ³⁴ "Ha! What do you want of us, Jesus, you Nazarene? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are. You are God's Holy One." ³⁵ But Jesus reproved him, saying "Be quiet! Get out of him at once!" So the demon threw the man down in the midst of them and came out of him without doing him any harm. ³⁶ Amazement then seized them all and they continued to talk it over among themselves, and to say, "What does this message mean? For with authority and power He gives orders to foul spirits, and they come out."

¹⁷ A man from the crowd answered Him, "Teacher, I brought my son to you, for he has a dumb spirit. ¹⁸ Wherever it seizes him, it convulses him, and he foams at the mouth and grinds his teeth; and he is wasting away. So I asked your disciples to drive it out, but they could not do it." ¹⁹ He answered them, "Oh, you unbelieving people of the times! How long must I be with you! How long must I put up with you! Bring him to me." ²⁰ And they brought the boy to Him. As soon as the spirit saw Him, it convulsed the boy, and he fell on the ground and kept rolling over and foaming at the mouth. ²¹ Then He asked his father, "How long has he been like this?" He answered, "From his childhood; ²² and many a time it has thrown him into the fire or into the water, to destroy him. But if there is anything you can do for him, do pity us and help us!" ²³ Jesus said to him, "If there is anything I can do! Everything is possible for him who has faith!" ²⁴ The boy's father at once cried out and said, "I do have faith; help my lack of faith!" ²⁵ Then Jesus, because He saw that a crowd was rushing up to Him, reproved the foul spirit and said to it, "You deaf and dumb spirit, get out of him, I charge you, and never get into him again." ²⁶ Then it gave a shriek and violently convulsed the boy, and got out of him. And the boy looked like a corpse, so much so that the people said that he was dead. ²⁷ But Jesus grasped his hand and raised him, and he got up. ²⁸ When Jesus got home and was by Himself, His disciples were asking Him, "Why could not we drive it out?" ²⁹ He answered them, "This sort of thing can be driven out only by prayer."

⁸ For Jesus was saying to him, "You foul spirit, come out of him."

⁴² Even while the boy was coming to Him, the demon dashed him down and convulsed him, but Jesus reproved the foul spirit and cured the boy and gave back to his father.

¹⁷ Now the seventy returned and joyously reported, "Lord, even the demons are submitting to us in your name."

⁴⁹ Then John answered, "Master, we saw a man driving out demons by the use of your name, and we tried to stop him, because he does not belong to our followers." ⁵⁰ Jesus said to him, "Stop hindering him, for the man who is not against you is for you."

²⁰ But if I by the finger of God am driving the demons out, then the kingdom of God has come to you.

¹⁸ She kept this up for a number of days. Because Paul was so much annoyed by her, he turned and said to the spirit in her, "In the name of Jesus Christ I order you to come out of her." And that very moment it came out.

¹³ But some wandering Jews who claimed to be driving out the evil spirits tried to use the name of the Lord Jesus on those who had evil spirits in them, saying, "I command you by that Jesus whom Paul preaches!" ¹⁴ Sceva, a Jewish high priest, had seven sons who were doing this. ¹⁵ But on one occasion the evil spirit answered, "Jesus I know and Paul I know about, but who are you?" ¹⁶ So the man in whom the evil spirit was, leaped upon them and so violently overpowered two of them that they ran out of the house stripped of their clothes and wounded.

¹² as an instrument that the people carried off to the sick, towels or aprons used by him, and at their touch they were cured of their diseases, and the evil spirits went out of them.

¹³ So you must take on God's full armor, so as to be able to take a stand in the day when evil attacks you, and, after having completely finished the contest, to hold your own.

⁷ So then, submit to God. Resist the devil and he will fly from you.

¹⁸ For Christ Himself, once for all, died for our sins, the Innocent for the guilty to bring us to God, being put to death in physical form but made alive in the Spirit, ¹⁹ in which He went and preached to the spirits in prison, ²⁰ who had once been disobedient, while God's patience was awaiting in the days when Noah was preparing an ark, in which a few people-- eight, to be exact -- were brought safely through the water. ²¹ Baptism, which corresponds to this figure, now saves you, too -- I do not mean the mere removal of physical stains, but the craving for a clear conscience toward God -- through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, ²² who has gone to heaven and is now at God's right hand, with angels, heavenly authorities and powers made subject to Him.

¹³ So He let them do so. And the foul spirits came out of the man and got into the hogs, and the drove of about two thousand rushed over the cliff and into the sea and were drowned.

³⁸ John said to Him, "Teacher, we saw a man using your name to drive out demons, and we tried to stop him, for he was not one of our followers."

¹⁵ But on one occasion the evil spirit answered, "Jesus I know and Paul I know about, but who are you?"

¹¹ God also continued to do such wonder-works through Paul ¹² as an instrument that the people carried off to the sick, towels or aprons used by him, and at their touch they were cured of their diseases, and the evil spirits went out of them.

¹⁹ Listen! I have given you power to tread on snakes and scorpions, and to trample on all the power of the enemy, and nothing at all will ever harm you.

¹⁰ From now on you must grow stronger through union with the Lord and through His mighty power. ¹¹ You must put on God's full armor, so as to be able to stand up against the devil's stratagems. ¹² For our contest is not with human foes alone, but with the rulers, authorities, and cosmic powers of this dark world; that is, with the spirit-forces of evil challenging us in the heavenly contest. ¹³ So you must take on God's full armor, so as to be able to take a stand in the day when evil attacks you, and, after having completely finished the contest, to hold your own. ¹⁴ Hold your position, then, with your waist encircled with the belt of truth, put on right-doing as a coat of mail, ¹⁵ and put on your feet the preparation the good news of peace supplies. ¹⁶ Besides all these, take on the shield which faith provides, for with it you will be able to put out all the fire-tipped arrows shot by the evil one, ¹⁷ take the helmet salvation provides, and take the sword the Spirit wields, which is the word of God. ¹⁸ Keep on praying in the Spirit, with every kind of prayer and entreaty, at every opportunity, be ever on the alert with perfect devotion and entreaty for all God's people,

⁸ Be calm and alert. Your opponent the devil is always prowling about like a roaring lion, trying to devour you.

¹⁶ He who believes it and is baptized will be saved, but he who does not believe it will be condemned. ¹⁷ And the following signs will attend those who believe: By using my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in foreign languages; ¹⁸ they will take snakes in their hands; even if they drink anything poisonous, it will not hurt them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will get well."
