¹⁸ Chasten thy son, for thus he will be hopeful; but be not in thy soul transported to haughtiness.

⁸ My son, hear the instruction of thy father and reject not the maxims of thy mother: ⁹ for thou wilt receive a graceful crown for thy head; and a chain of gold for thy neck.

⁷ If you endure correction God dealeth with you as sons. For what son is there whom a father doth not correct? ⁸ Now if you are without correction, of which all are partakers, you are indeed bastards and not sons. ⁹ Well then: we have had fathers of our flesh who have corrected us, and we have reverenced them; shall we not much more submit ourselves to the father of our spirits, and live? ¹⁰ For they indeed for a few days corrected us as they thought fit; but he for our advantage, that we may partake of his holiness. ¹¹ Now all correction seemeth, for the present, not to be matter of joy, but of grief; yet afterwards it produceth the peaceful fruit of righteousness to them who are exercised therewith.

⁶ And these injunctions, which I this day give thee in charge, shall be in thy heart, and in thy soul; ⁷ and thou shalt impress them on thy children, and speak of them, when thou sittest at home, and when thou art walking abroad, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up; ⁸ and thou shalt bind them for a sign on thy right hand, and it shall be immoveably before thine eyes. ⁹ You shall also write them on the posts of your houses and gates.

¹⁷ Correct thy son and he will give thee rest; and add honour to thy life.

¹³ Refrain not from correcting a child: for if thou beat him with a rod, thou mayst prevent his death.

³ Behold sons are an heritage of the Lord; a reward of the fruit of the womb.

¹⁵ The rod and reproofs give wisdom: but a child led astray shameth his parents.

⁷ shewing thyself in all things a pattern of good works; in thy doctrine displaying integrity, gravity, incorruptness,

²⁴ He who spareth the rod hateth his son; but he who loveth him correcteth diligently.

²¹ Fathers, exasperate not your children, lest they be discouraged
