¹ For the conclusion. Upon Maelath. Of understanding. By David. The fool said in his heart, There is no God. They have corrupted themselves and are become abominable by iniquities, there is none who doeth good.

³⁷ If I do not the works of my father, believe me not.

⁴⁴ No one can come to me, unless the Father, who hath sent me, draw him. And as for me, I will raise him up at the last day.

⁸ Be on your guard, that none may make a prey of you by their philosophy and vain deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the elements of the world, and not according to Christ.

²² Fly then the passions of youth and pursue righteousness, fidelity, love, peace with them who invoke the Lord with a pure heart. ²³ And avoid foolish and ignorant debates, knowing that they generate strifes. ²⁴ Now, the servant of the Lord ought not to be at strife; but ought to be gentle towards all, ready to teach, patient of ills, ²⁵ with meekness instructing opposers: perhaps God may grant them a change of mind so as to acknowledge the truth, ²⁶ and they who have been captivated by the devil for his pleasure, may rouse and escape from his snare.

⁷ But ask, I pray thee, the beasts of the field, if they could speak to thee; and the birds of the air, if they could tell thee; ⁸ speak to the earth, if it could converse with thee; even the fishes of the sea can tell thee. ⁹ Who then among all these doth not know that the hand of the Lord hath done these things? ¹⁰ Is not the life of all living beings in his hand; and the breath of every man? ¹¹ The ear indeed discerneth words and the palate tasteth meats. ¹² By length of time wisdom is acquired, and by long life, experience. ¹³ With him is wisdom and power; with him counsel and understanding. ¹⁴ If he demolish who can rebuild? If he shut against men, who can open? ¹⁵ If he withhold water he drieth the earth. And when he let it loose, he overthrew and destroyed it, ¹⁶ With him is strength and power; with him knowledge and understanding. ¹⁷ He hath led counsellors away captive. And confounded the judges of the earth. ¹⁸ It is he who settleth kings on thrones and girded their loins with a girdle; ¹⁹ who sendeth priests into captivity and overthrew the sovereigns of the earth; ²⁰ who changeth the lips of liege men and knoweth the wisdom of elders; ²¹ who poureth contempt on princes and hath healed them who were low; ²² who revealeth deep things from darkness; and hath brought to light the shades of death; ²³ who leadeth nations into error and destroyeth them; who prostrateth nations and conducteth them; ²⁴ who changeth the hearts of the rulers of a land and hath caused them to wander in a way which they knew not: ²⁵ That they might grope in darkness without light; and that they might stagger like a drunken man.

¹⁴ Now an animal man receiveth not those dictates of the spirit of God; for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot know them, because they are to be spiritually examined;

¹ But the spirit saith expressly that in latter times some will apostatise from this belief, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines concerning demons, ² through the hypocrisy of liars, who have their own conscience seared, ³ forbidding marriage, and enjoining an abstinence from meats which God hath created to be partaken of with thankfulness by the faithful, and by them who are convinced of this truth, ⁴ that every thing which God created is good, and nothing to be rejected; for when taken with thankfulness ⁵ it is sanctified by the permission of God and prayer.

¹⁹ Because that which is to be known of God is manifest among them, for God hath manifested it to them; ²⁰ for his invisible attributes, both his eternal power and divine majesty, being thought upon, are from the creation of the world clearly discoverable by the things made, so that they are without excuse

²⁴ You see then that a man is justified by works, and not by belief only.
