³⁷ Jesus said to him, You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. ³⁸ This is the first and greatest commandment. ³⁹ And the second is like it, You shall love your neighbour as yourself. ⁴⁰ On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

⁶ And you shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that you are not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.

¹³ Greater love has no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.

¹ Let every man be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority but from God: and those authorities that exist have been ordained by God. ² Therefore, whoever resists the authorities, resists the ordinance of God: and those who resist shall bring condemnation upon themselves. ³ For rulers are not a terror for those who do good works, but to those who do evil. Do you want to have no fear of the one in authority? do that which is good, and you shall have his praise: ⁴ For he is a minister of God for your good. But if you do that which is evil, be afraid; for he does not bear the sword in vain: for he is a minister of God to execute wrath upon the one who does evil. ⁵ Therefore you must be subject, not only to avoid wrath, but also for conscience sake. ⁶ For this reason you also pay taxes: for they are God's ministers, attending continually to this very service. ⁷ Therefore, give to all men what is due them: tax to whom tax is due; revenue to whom revenue; respect to whom respect; honour to whom honour. ⁸ Owe no man anything, but to love one another: for he who loves others has fulfilled the law. ⁹ For the commandments, You shall not commit adultery, You shall not kill, You shall not steal, You shall not covet; and any other commandments, are summed up in this saying, You shall love your neighbour as yourself. ¹⁰ Love does no wrong to a neighbour: therefore love is the fulfillment of the law. ¹¹ And besides that, you know the hour, that it is now high time to awaken from sleep: for now our salvation is nearer than when we believed. ¹² The night is far gone, the day is at hand: therefore let us cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light. ¹³ Let us conduct ourselves properly, as in the day; not in carousing and drunkenness, not in debauchery and sensuality, not in strife and jealousy. ¹⁴ But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its lusts.

¹⁶ Live as free men, not using your liberty as a cloak for evil, but live as the servants of God.

²⁹ Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said, We ought to obey God rather than men.

³⁶ Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then my servants would fight, that I should not be delivered up to the Jews: but my kingdom is not of this world.

⁹ But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God; that you should declare the praises of him who has called you out of darkness into his marvellous light. ¹⁰ In times past you were not a people, but now you are the people of God: once you had not obtained mercy, but now you have obtained mercy.

¹⁷ Honour all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honour the king.

¹ Therefore I urge, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; ² For kings, and for all who are in authority; that we may lead quiet and peaceable lives in all godliness and reverence. ³ For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour;

¹³ These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off; and they were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and exiles on the earth. ¹⁴ For those who say such things declare plainly that they seek a country of their own. ¹⁵ And truly, if they had been thinking of that country from which they came out, they would have had opportunity to return. ¹⁶ Instead, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he has prepared for them a city.

²⁰ But our citizenship is in heaven; from whence we eagerly look for a Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ:
