¹⁶ For truly, men swear by one who is greater than themselves: and an oath given for confirmation puts an end to all disputes.

¹⁸ And to whom did he swear that they should not enter his rest, but to those who disobeyed?

²⁸ For the law appoints men, who are frail, to be high priests; but the word of the oath, which came after the law, appoints the Son, who has been made perfect forever.

²¹ For others were indeed made priests without an oath; but he with an oath from the one who said to him, The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind, You are a priest forever.

¹⁷ Therefore God, wanting to show more clearly to the heirs of the promise the immutable nature of his purpose, confirmed it by an oath:

¹³ For when God made a promise to Abraham, because he could swear by no one greater, he swore by himself,

¹² But above all things, my brethren, do not swear, either by heaven, or by the earth, or with any other oath: but let your yes be yes; and your no, no; lest you fall into condemnation.

³³ Again, you have heard that it has been said to them of old, You shall not swear falsely, but shall fulfill your oaths to the Lord: ³⁴ But I say to you, Do not swear at all; either by heaven; for it is God's throne: ³⁵ Or by the earth; for it is his footstool: or by Jerusalem; for it is the city of the great King. ³⁶ Nor shall you swear by your head, because you can not make one hair white or black. ³⁷ But let your statements be, Yes for yes; No for no: for whatever is more than these comes from the evil one.
