⁶ Jehovah then passed in front of him and called out: »I, Jehovah, am a God who is full of compassion and pity. I am not easily angered and show great love and faithfulness. ⁷ »I keep my promise for thousands of generations and forgive evil and sin. But I will not fail to punish children and grandchildren to the third and fourth generation for the sins of their fathers.«

²² A merry heart is good medicine but a broken spirit dries up the bones.

²⁸ »Do you not know? Have you not heard? JEHOVAH IS THE EVERLASTING GOD, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and no one can measure (find out) his understanding. ²⁹ »He gives strength to those who grow tired and increases the strength of those who are weak. ³⁰ Even young people grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall. ³¹ »Those who hope in Jehovah will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary! They will walk and not be faint.«

²⁵ I have been young, and now I am old, but I have never seen a righteous person abandoned or his descendants begging for food.

¹² Teach us to number each of our days so that we may present to you a heart of wisdom.

¹⁴ Even when they are old, they still bear fruit. They are always healthy and fresh. ¹⁵ They make it known that Jehovah is upright. He is my rock. He is never unrighteous.

⁵ I am mindful of your sincere faith, which first dwelt in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am sure that it is in you as well.

¹⁷ But the loving kindness of Jehovah is from everlasting to everlasting on those who reverence him, and his righteousness is to the sons of sons.

²² A good man leaves an inheritance to his children's children. The wealth of the sinner is preserved for the righteous.

⁴ Even in your old age with gray hair I am he, I am he who will support you. I have made you and I will bear your burden (take care of you). I will sustain (support) (strengthen) you and I will rescue you (keep you safe).

⁹ »Be on your guard! Make sure you do not forget, as long as you live, what you have seen with your own eyes. Teach them to your children and your grandchildren.

¹ Teach sound doctrine. ² Aged men should be temperate, serious, sound in mind, sound in faith, in love, and in endurance. ³ Aged women likewise should be reverent in behavior and teachers of that which is good. They should not be slanderers nor enslaved to too much wine. ⁴ They may train the young women to love their husbands, to love their children, ⁵ to be sober minded, chaste, workers at home, kind, being in subjection to their own husbands, that the word of God will not be (defamed) dishonored.

⁴ One generation shall praise your works to another. They will declare your mighty acts.

³¹ Gray hair is a crown of glory when it is found in the way of righteousness.

⁶ Grandchildren are the crowns of old men. Fathers take pride in their children.
