Acts 2:1-47

1 Now when the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. 2 Suddenly there came from the sky a sound like the rushing of a mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. 3 Tongues like fire appeared and were distributed to them, and one sat on each of them. 4 They were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them the ability to speak. 5 Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout people from every nation under the sky. 6 When this sound was heard, the crowd came together, and were bewildered, because everyone heard them speaking in his own language. 7 They were all amazed and marveled, saying, "Look, are not all these who speak Galileans? 8 How do we hear, everyone in our own native language? 9 Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and people from Mesopotamia, Judea, Cappadocia, Pontus, Asia, 10 Phrygia, Pamphylia, Egypt, the parts of Libya around Cyrene, visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, 11 Cretans and Arabians: we hear them speaking in our tongues the mighty works of God." 12 They were all amazed, and were perplexed, saying one to another, "What does this mean?" 13 Others, mocking, said, "They are filled with new wine." 14 But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and spoke out to them, "You men of Judea, and all you who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to my words. 15 For these are not drunk, as you suppose, seeing it is only nine in the morning. 16 But this is what has been spoken through the prophet Joel: 17 'And it will be in the last days, says God, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh; and your sons and your daughters will prophesy, and your young men will see visions, and your old men will dream dreams. 18 And even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy. 19 And I will show wonders in the sky above, and signs on the earth beneath; blood, and fire, and billows of smoke. 20 The sun will be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and glorious day of the Lord comes. 21 And it will be that whoever will call on the name of the Lord will be saved.' 22 "Men of Israel, hear these words. Jesus the Nazorean, a man approved by God to you by mighty works and wonders and signs which God did by him in the midst of you, even as you yourselves know, 23 him, being delivered up by the determined counsel and foreknowledge of God, by the hand of lawless men, crucified and killed; 24 whom God raised up, having freed him from the pains of death, because it was not possible that he should be held by it. 25 For David says concerning him, 'I saw the Lord always before me, for he is at my right hand, that I should not be shaken. 26 Therefore my heart was glad, and my tongue rejoiced, and moreover my flesh also will dwell in hope; 27 because you will not abandon my soul in Sheol, neither will you allow your Holy One to see decay. 28 You made known to me the paths of life. You will make me full of joy in your presence.' 29 "Brothers, I may tell you freely of the patriarch David, that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. 30 Therefore, being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that one of his descendants would sit on his throne, 31 he foreseeing this spoke about the resurrection of the Christ, that neither was he left in Sheol, nor did his flesh see decay. 32 This Jesus God raised up, to which we all are witnesses. 33 Being therefore exalted by the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he has poured out this, which you see and hear. 34 For David did not ascend into the heavens, but he says himself, 'The Lord said to my Lord, "Sit by my right hand, 35 until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet."' 36 "Let all the house of Israel therefore know certainly that God has made him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified." 37 Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, "Brothers, what should we do?" 38 Peter said to them, "Repent, and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For to you is the promise, and to your children, and to all who are far off, even as many as the Lord our God will call to himself." 40 With many other words he testified, and exhorted them, saying, "Save yourselves from this crooked generation." 41 Then those who received his word were baptized. There were added that day about three thousand souls. 42 They continued steadfastly in the apostles' teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and prayer. 43 Fear came on every soul, and many wonders and signs were done through the apostles. 44 All who believed were together, and had all things in common. 45 They sold their possessions and goods, and distributed them to all, according as anyone had need. 46 Day by day, continuing steadfastly with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread at home, they took their food with gladness and singleness of heart, 47 praising God, and having favor with all the people. The Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.

1 Corinthians 14:39

39 Therefore, my brothers, desire earnestly to prophesy, and do not forbid speaking in tongues.

1 Corinthians 14:2

2 For the one who speaks in another language speaks not to people, but to God; for no one understands; but in the Spirit he speaks mysteries.

1 Corinthians 14:1-40

1 Follow after love, and earnestly desire spiritual things, and especially that you may prophesy. 2 For the one who speaks in another language speaks not to people, but to God; for no one understands; but in the Spirit he speaks mysteries. 3 But he who prophesies speaks to people for their encouragement, strengthening, and comfort. 4 He who speaks in another language edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church. 5 Now I desire to have you all speak with other languages, but rather that you would prophesy, and he is greater who prophesies than he who speaks with other languages, unless he interprets, that the church may be built up. 6 But now, brothers, if I come to you speaking with other languages, what would I profit you, unless I speak to you either by way of revelation, or of knowledge, or of prophesying, or of teaching? 7 Even things without life, giving a voice, whether pipe or harp, if they did not give a distinction in the sounds, how would it be known what is piped or harped? 8 For if the trumpet gave an uncertain sound, who would prepare himself for war? 9 So also you, unless you uttered by the tongue words easy to understand, how would it be known what is spoken? For you would be speaking into the air. 10 There are, it may be, so many kinds of voices in the world, and none is without meaning. 11 If then I do not know the meaning of the sound, I would be to him who speaks a foreigner, and he who speaks would be a foreigner to me. 12 So also you, since you are zealous for spiritual things, seek that you may abound to the building up of the church. 13 Therefore let him who speaks in another language pray that he may interpret. 14 For if I pray in another language, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful. 15 What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also. I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also. 16 Otherwise if you bless with the spirit, how will he who fills the place of the unlearned say the "Amen" at your giving of thanks, seeing he does not know what you say? 17 For you truly give thanks well, but the other person is not built up. 18 I thank God I speak in tongues more than you all. 19 However in the church I would rather speak five words with my understanding, that I might instruct others also, than ten thousand words in another language. 20 Brothers, do not be children in thoughts, yet in malice be babies, but in thoughts be mature. 21 In the law it is written, "By people of strange tongues and by the lips of strangers I will speak to this people; but even then they will not listen to me," says the Lord. 22 Therefore tongues are for a sign, not to those who believe, but to the unbelieving; but prophesying is for a sign, not to the unbelieving, but to those who believe. 23 If therefore the whole church is assembled together and all speak in tongues, and unlearned or unbelieving people come in, won't they say that you are crazy? 24 But if all prophesy, and someone unbelieving or unlearned comes in, he is reproved by all, and he is judged by all. 25 And thus the secrets of his heart are revealed. So he will fall down on his face and worship God, declaring that God is among you indeed. 26 What is it then, brothers? When you come together, each one has a psalm, has a teaching, has a revelation, has another language, has an interpretation. Let all things be done to build each other up. 27 If anyone speaks in another language, let it be two, or at the most three, and in turn; and let one interpret. 28 But if there is no interpreter, let him keep silent in the church, and let him speak to himself, and to God. 29 Let the prophets speak, two or three, and let the others discern. 30 But if a revelation is made to another sitting by, let the first keep silent. 31 For you can all prophesy one by one, that all may learn and all may be encouraged. 32 The spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets, 33 for God is not a God of confusion, but of peace. As in all the churches of the saints, 34 let the women keep silent in the churches, for it has not been permitted for them to speak; but let them be in subjection, as the Law also says. 35 If they desire to learn anything, let them ask their own husbands at home, for it is shameful for a woman to chatter in the church. 36 What? Was it from you that the word of God went out? Or did it come to you alone? 37 If anyone thinks himself to be a prophet, or spiritual, let him recognize the things which I write to you, that they are the commandment of the Lord. 38 But if someone does not recognize this, he is not recognized. 39 Therefore, my brothers, desire earnestly to prophesy, and do not forbid speaking in tongues. 40 Let all things be done decently and in order.
