³¹ therefore make no such sollicitous enquiries, as what shall we eat? or what shall we drink? or how shall we be clothed? ³² things which the Gentiles are so thoughtful about, and which your heavenly Father knows that you want. ³³ but first seek the kingdom of God, and that righteousness which leads to it, and all these things shall be superadded. be not

²⁶ what advantage is it to a man to gain the whole world at the price of his life? or what would not a man pay down to preserve his life?

²⁷ but Jesus casting his eye upon them, said, what is impossible to men, is not so to God; for to God all things are possible.

¹⁹ then I will say to my soul, soul, you have many enjoyments in reserve for a number of years; take your ease, eat, drink, and be merry. ²⁰ but God said to him, thou fool, this night shall thy soul be required of thee: who then shall enjoy what thou hast provided? ²¹ such is he, who heaps up his treasure here, and makes no provision for another world.

⁶ Religion indeed with contentment leads to great gain. ⁷ as we brought nothing into the world, certain it is, we can carry nothing away. having therefore food and raiment, ⁸ we ought to think that sufficient. but they who will be rich, expose ⁹ themselves to temptations and snares, and to many foolish noxious passions, which plunge men into ruin and perdition. for the love of money is the root of all evil: ¹⁰ which some having obtain'd, have revolted from the faith, and brought upon themselves variety of piercing pains.

⁴ Rejoice in the Lord alway: I say it again, rejoice. ⁵ let your meekness be known unto all men. ⁶ the Lord is coming: be not in any manner of sollicitude, but in all your occasions lay your requests before God by prayer and supplication accompany'd by thanksgiving. ⁷ and the favour of God, which surpasses all comprehension, shall keep your hearts and mind attach'd to Jesus Christ.

¹⁵ Love not the world, nor let worldly things engage your affections. he that is worldly affected is a stranger to divine love.

²⁴ no man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or he will be attach'd to the one, and neglectful of the other. ye cannot serve God and Mamon.

¹ As for you that are rich: weep, and lament the miserys that are falling upon you. ² your wealth is wasted, your wardrobe is devour'd by the worm, ³ and your gold and silver by rust: that rust shall convict you: that rust shall corrode your flesh like a caustic, which you have treasur'd up against the last days.

⁸ he that takes no care of his relations, especially those of his own family, has renounc'd the faith and is worse than an infidel.
