Wherefore, let us be afraid, lest a promise of entrance into the rest, being left, any of you should seem to fall short of it.
For glad tidings have been proclaimed to us, as well as to them: but the word which they heard did not profit them; not being mixed with faith in them who heard it.
For we, who have believed, do enter into the rest, as he said, "So, I swore, in my wrath, They shall not enter into my rest"; namely, from the works that were finished at the formation of the world.
For he has spoken somewhere concerning the seventh day, thus: "And God rested on the seventh day, from all his works."
And in this, again, "They shall not enter into my rest."
Since, then, it remains for some to enter into it, and that they who first received the good tidings, did not enter in on account of unbelief:
again, he limits a certain day, saying, by David, "Today," after so long a time; as it is said, "Today, if you will hear his voice, harden not your hearts."
For, if Joshua has caused them to rest, he would not, after that, have spoken of another day.
There remains, therefore, a divine rest for the people of God.
For he who has entered into his rest, has himself, also, rested from his own works, like as God, also, rested from his.
Wherefore let us carefully strive to enter into THIS REST, lest any one should fall after the same example of unbelief.
