¹ Now Dinah the daughter of Leah, whom she had borne to Jacob, went out to see the daughters of the land. ² And Shechem, the son of Hamor the Hivite, the prince of the land, saw her. And he took her and lay with her and raped her. ³ And his soul clung to Dinah, the daughter of Jacob, and he loved the girl and spoke _⌊tenderly_⌋* to the girl. ⁴ So Shechem said to Hamor his father, saying, "Get this girl for me as a wife." ⁵ And Jacob heard that Dinah his daughter had been defiled, but his sons were with his flocks in the field. And Jacob kept silent until they came. ⁶ And Hamor, father of Shechem, went out to Jacob to speak with him. ⁷ And the sons of Jacob came in from the field when they heard it. And the men were distressed and very angry because he had done a disgraceful thing in Israel by having sexual relations with the daughter of Jacob—_⌊something that_⌋* should not be done. ⁸ And Hamor spoke with them saying, "Shechem my son _⌊is in love with_⌋* your daughter. Please give her to him for a wife. ⁹ Make marriages with us. Give us your daughters and take our daughters for yourselves. ¹⁰ You shall dwell with us and the land shall be before you; settle and trade in it, and acquire property in it." ¹¹ Then Shechem said to her father and to her brothers, "Let me find favor in your eyes, and whatever you say to me I will do. ¹² _⌊Make the bride price and gift as high as you like_⌋;* I will give what you say to me. But give me the girl as a wife." ¹³ Then the sons of Jacob answered Shechem and his father Hamor speaking deceitfully, because he had defiled Dinah their sister. ¹⁴ And they said to them, "We cannot do this thing, to give our sister to a man who is uncircumcised, for that is a disgrace for us. ¹⁵ Only on this condition will we give consent to you; if you will become like us—every male among you to be circumcised. ¹⁶ Then we will give our daughters to you, and we will take for ourselves your daughters, and we will live with you and become one family. ¹⁷ But if you will not listen to us, to be circumcised, then we will take our daughters and we will go." ¹⁸ And their words were good in the eyes of Hamor and in the eyes of Shechem, the son of Hamor. ¹⁹ And the young man did not delay to do the thing, for he wanted the daughter of Jacob. Now he was the most honored of his father's house. ²⁰ Then Hamor and his son Shechem came to the gate of their city, and they spoke to the men of their city, saying, ²¹ "These men are at peace with us. Let them dwell in the land and let them trade in it. Now, behold, the land is _⌊broad enough for them_⌋.* Let us take their daughters as wives, and let us give our daughters to them. ²² Only on this condition will they give consent to us, to live with us and to become one family—when every male among us is circumcised as they are circumcised. ²³ Will not their livestock and their property and all their animals be ours? Only let us give consent to them so they will live among us." ²⁴ And all those who went out of the gate of his city listened to Hamor and Shechem. Every male was circumcised, all those who went out of the gate of his city. ²⁵ And it happened that on the third day, while they were in pain, two of the sons of Jacob, Simeon and Levi, the brothers of Dinah, each took his sword and came against the unsuspecting city and killed all the males. ²⁶ They killed Hamor and his son Shechem with the edge of the sword, and they took Dinah from the house of Shechem and went out. ²⁷ The other sons of Jacob came upon the slain and plundered the city, because they had defiled their sister. ²⁸ They took their flocks and their cattle and their donkeys, and whatever was in the field. ²⁹ They captured and plundered all that was in the houses—all their wealth, their little ones, and their women. ³⁰ Then Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, "You have brought trouble on me, making me stink among the inhabitants of the land, among the Canaanites and the Perizzites! I am few in number! If they gather against me and attack me, I will be destroyed—I and my household!" ³¹ But they said, "Shall he treat our sister like a prostitute?"

¹⁶ " 'If a man seduces a virgin who is not engaged and he lies with her, he surely will give her bride price _⌊to have her as his wife_⌋.*

¹⁰ "When you go out for battle against your enemies, and Yahweh your God gives them into your hand, and you lead the captives* away, ¹¹ and you see among the captives* a woman beautiful in appearance, and you become attached to her and you want to take her as a wife, ¹² then you shall bring her into your household, and she shall shave her head, and she shall trim her nails. ¹³ And she shall remove the clothing of her captivity from her, and she shall remain in your house, and she shall mourn her father and her mother _⌊a full month_⌋,* and after this _⌊you may have sex with her_⌋,* and you may marry her, and she may _⌊become your wife_⌋.* ¹⁴ And then if you do not take delight in her, then you shall let her go _⌊to do whatever she wants_⌋,* but you shall not treat her as a slave, since you have dishonored* her.

¹ "You shall not watch the ox of your neighbor or his sheep or goat straying and ignore them; certainly you shall return them to your neighbor. ² And if your countryman* is not near you or you do not know _⌊who he is_⌋,* then you shall bring it _⌊to your household_⌋,* and it shall be* with you _⌊until your countryman seeks after it_⌋,* and you shall return it to him. ³ And thus also you shall do regarding* his donkey, and thus you shall do concerning* his garment, and so you shall do with respect to* all of the lost property of your countryman* that is lost from him and you find it; you are not allowed to withhold help. ⁴ "You shall not see the donkey of your neighbor or his ox fallen on the road and you ignore them; certainly you must help them get up along with him. ⁵ "The apparel of a man shall not be put on* a woman, and a man shall not wear the clothing of a woman, because everyone who does these things is detestable to Yahweh your God. ⁶ "If a bird's nest is found _⌊before you_⌋* on the road in any tree or on the ground, and there are chicks or eggs, and the mother is lying down on the chicks or the eggs, you shall not take the mother along with the young; ⁷ you shall certainly let the mother go, but you may take the young for yourselves;* do this _⌊so that it may go well_⌋* for you and _⌊you may live long in the land_⌋.* ⁸ "When you build a new house then* you shall make a parapet wall* for your roof, so that you will not bring bloodguilt on your house _⌊if anyone should fall from it_⌋.* ⁹ "You shall not sow your vineyard with differing kinds of seed, so that you shall not forfeit _⌊the whole harvest_⌋,* both the seed that you sowed and the yield of the vineyard. ¹⁰ "You shall not plow with an ox and with a donkey yoked together. ¹¹ "You shall not wear woven material made of wool and linen mixed together. ¹² "You shall make tassels for yourselves* on the four corners of your clothing with which you cover yourself. ¹³ "If a man takes a woman and _⌊he has sex with her_⌋,* but he then _⌊dislikes her_⌋,* ¹⁴ and _⌊he accuses her falsely_⌋,* and _⌊he defames her_⌋,* and he says 'This woman I took and I lay with her and _⌊I discovered that she was not a virgin_⌋,'* ¹⁵ then in defense the father of the young woman shall take, along with her mother, and together they must bring out the evidence of the virginity of the young woman to display it to the elders of the city _⌊at the city gate_⌋.* ¹⁶ And then the father of the young woman shall say to the elders, 'I gave my daughter to this man as wife, but he now _⌊dislikes_⌋* her, ¹⁷ and now look _⌊he has accused her falsely_⌋,* saying, "I did not find _⌊your daughter a virgin_⌋,"* but here is evidence of the virginity of my daughter'; and they shall spread the cloth out _⌊before_⌋* the elders of the city. ¹⁸ Then the elders of that city shall take the man, and they shall discipline him. ¹⁹ Then they shall fine him a hundred shekels of silver, and they shall give them to the father of the young woman, for _⌊he defamed an Israelite young woman_⌋,* and _⌊she shall become his wife_⌋;* he will not be allowed _⌊to divorce her_⌋* all his days. ²⁰ "But if _⌊this charge_⌋* was true, _⌊and the signs of virginity were not found_⌋* for the young woman, ²¹ and then they shall bring out the young woman to the doorway of the house of her father, and the men of her city shall stone her with stones, and she shall die, because she did a disgraceful thing in Israel _⌊by playing the harlot_⌋* in the house of her father, and so you shall purge the evil from your midst. ²² "If a man is found lying _⌊with a married woman_⌋,* then they shall both die; _⌊both of them_⌋,* the man who lay with the woman and the woman also, so you shall purge the evil from Israel. ²³ "If it happens that a young woman, a virgin, is engaged to a man, and a man finds her in the town and lies with her, ²⁴ then you shall bring out _⌊both of them_⌋* to the gate of that city, and you shall stone them with stones so that they shall die, the young woman because she did not cry out in the town, and the man because* he violated his neighbor's wife; and so you shall purge the evil from your midst. ²⁵ "But if the man finds the young engaged woman in the field and the man overpowers her and _⌊he has sex with her_⌋,* then the man only* must die who lay* with her. ²⁶ But you shall not do anything* to the young woman, for there is not reckoned against* the young woman _⌊a sin deserving death_⌋;* _⌊it is similar to when_⌋* a man rises up against his neighbor and murders him, _⌊a fellow human being_⌋,* just so is this _⌊case_⌋,* ²⁷ for he found her in the field, the engaged young woman cried out, but there was no* rescuer _⌊to help her_⌋.* ²⁸ "If a man finds a young woman, a virgin who is not engaged, and he seizes her and _⌊he has sex with her_⌋* and they are caught, ²⁹ then _⌊the man who lay with her_⌋* shall give to the father of the young woman fifty shekels of silver, and she shall become _⌊his wife_⌋* _⌊because_⌋* he violated her, and he is not allowed to divorce her _⌊during his lifetime_⌋.* ³⁰ * A man may not take the wife of his father, and so _⌊he may not dishonor his father_⌋.*

¹⁶ " 'If a man seduces a virgin who is not engaged and he lies with her, he surely will give her bride price _⌊to have her as his wife_⌋.* ¹⁷ If her father absolutely refuses to give her to him, he will weigh out money according to the bride price for the virgin.

²⁵ "But if the man finds the young engaged woman in the field and the man overpowers her and _⌊he has sex with her_⌋,* then the man only* must die who lay* with her. ²⁶ But you shall not do anything* to the young woman, for there is not reckoned against* the young woman _⌊a sin deserving death_⌋;* _⌊it is similar to when_⌋* a man rises up against his neighbor and murders him, _⌊a fellow human being_⌋,* just so is this _⌊case_⌋,* ²⁷ for he found her in the field, the engaged young woman cried out, but there was no* rescuer _⌊to help her_⌋.*

¹ It happened afterwards that Absalom the son of David had a beautiful sister whose name was Tamar, and Amnon the son of David fell in love with her. ² And Amnon _⌊was so frustrated that he felt ill_⌋* because of Tamar his sister, because she was a virgin, and it was too difficult in Amnon's eyes to do anything with her. ³ Now Amnon had a friend whose name was Jonadab the son of Shimeah, the brother of David. (Now Jonadab was a very crafty man.) ⁴ And he said to him, "Why are you so sullen _⌊every morning_⌋,* O son of the king? Will you not tell me?" And Amnon said to him, "I am in love with Tamar, the sister of my brother Absalom." ⁵ Then Jonadab said to him, "Lie down on your bed and appear ill. If your father comes to see you, you shall say to him, 'Please let Tamar my sister come and give me food to eat, and let her prepare the food before my eyes, in order that I may see it and eat from her hand.'" ⁶ So Amnon lay down and pretended to be ill, and the king came to see him. Amnon said to the king, "Please let Tamar my sister come, and let her bake two cakes before my eyes that I may eat from her hand." ⁷ So David sent to the house for Tamar, saying, "Please go to the house of Amnon your brother and prepare food for him." ⁸ Tamar went to the house of Amnon her brother. Now he was lying down, and she took the dough and kneaded it and made cakes before his eyes, and she baked the cakes. ⁹ Then she took the pan and poured it out before him, but he refused to eat. Then Amnon said, "Let all the men go out from me." So all the men went out from him. ¹⁰ Then Amnon said to Tamar, "Bring the food to the private room that I may eat from your hand." So Tamar took the cakes which she had made and brought them to Amnon her brother in* the private room. ¹¹ When she brought them near to him to eat, he took hold of her and said to her, "Come, lie with me, my sister!" ¹² Then Tamar said to him, "No, my brother! Do not force me, for such a thing has not been done in Israel. Do not do this disgraceful thing! ¹³ As for me, where should I take my disgrace? You will be as one of the fools in Israel. So please, speak to the king, for he will not withhold me from you." ¹⁴ But he was not willing to listen to her voice. He was stronger than she, and he forced her and lay with her. ¹⁵ Then Amnon hated her _⌊very deeply_⌋,* for the hatred with which he hated her was greater than the love with which he had loved her. So Amnon said to her, "Get up and go." ¹⁶ She said to him, "No, because this evil in sending me away is greater than the other you have done to me." But he was not willing to listen to her. ¹⁷ Then he called his young man who was serving him and said, "Please send this woman from me to the outside, and bolt the door behind her!" ¹⁸ Now there was a long-sleeved robe on her, for so they clothed the daughters of the king who were virgins, in robes. His servant put her outside, and he bolted the door behind her. ¹⁹ Tamar put ashes on her head, and she tore the long-sleeved robe which was on her. She put her hand on her head, and _⌊she went away, crying out as she went_⌋.* ²⁰ Absalom her brother said to her, "Was Amnon your brother with you? But now, my sister, be quiet; he is your brother. _⌊Do not take this matter to heart_⌋."* So Tamar remained a desolate woman in the house of Absalom her brother. ²¹ Now King David heard all these things, and _⌊he became very angry_⌋.* ²² Absalom did not speak with Amnon _⌊either bad or good_⌋,* for Absalom hated Amnon _⌊over the matter when_⌋* he raped Tamar his sister. ²³ _⌊About two full years later_⌋,* Absalom's shearers were in Baal Hazor, which is near Ephraim, and Absalom summoned all the sons of the king. ²⁴ Then Absalom went to the king and said, "Look, here are your servant's shearers; please let the king and his servants go with your servant. ²⁵ The king said to Absalom, "No my son, not all of us shall go, so that we not be a burden to you." And he urged him, but he was not willing to go, but he blessed him. ²⁶ So Absalom said, "But will you not let Amnon my brother go with us?" And the king said to him, "Why should he go with you?" ²⁷ But Absalom pressed him, so he sent Amnon with him and all of the sons of the king. ²⁸ Absalom commanded his servants, saying, "Please watch. At the moment the heart of Amnon is _⌊tipsy_⌋* with wine, then I shall say to you, 'Strike Amnon down,' and you shall kill him! Don't be afraid. Is it not I myself who has commanded you? Be courageous and be _⌊valiant!_⌋* ²⁹ So Absalom's servants did to Amnon just as Absalom commanded, and all the sons of the king got up, and each mounted his mule and fled. ³⁰ _⌊While they were on the way_⌋,* the message came to David, "Absalom has killed all the sons of the king, and not one of them was left." ³¹ Then the king rose and tore his garments, and he lay on the ground, and all his servants standing by were tearing their garments. ³² Then Jonadab the son of Shimeah, the brother of David, responded and said, "My lord should not think that all the young men, the sons of the king, are dead, because only Amnon is dead. _⌊Absalom was talking about it_⌋,* as it was being determined from the day he* raped Tamar his sister. ³³ So then, let not my lord the king set his heart on this matter, thinking, 'All the sons of the king are dead,' for only Amnon alone is dead." ³⁴ So Absalom fled, and the young man who was keeping watch lifted up his eyes and saw, and there were many people coming from the road behind him from the side of the mountain. ³⁵ Jonadab said to the king, "Look, the sons of the king have come. According to the word of your servant, so it has come about." ³⁶ When he finished speaking, look, the sons of the king came and they lifted up their voice and wept. Also, the king and all his servants wept a very great weeping. ³⁷ Absalom fled and went to Talmai the son of Ammihur, the king of Geshur. David mourned over his son _⌊day after day_⌋.* ³⁸ But Absalom had fled and went to Geshur, and he was there three years. ³⁹ King David longed to go out to Absalom, for he was consoled that Amnon had died.
