³ it seemed best to me also—because I* have followed all things carefully from the beginning—to write them* down in orderly sequence for you, most excellent Theophilus,

¹⁶ because all things in the heavens and on the earth were created by him, things visible and things invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or powers, all things were created through him and for him, ¹⁷ and he himself is before all things, and in him all things are held together,

⁷ Remember your leaders, who spoke the word of God to you; _⌊considering the outcome of their way of life_⌋*, imitate their faith.

¹ For everything there is an appointed time, a time for every matter under heaven: ² a time to bear* and a time to die; a time to plant and a time to root up what is planted; ³ a time to kill and a time to heal; a time to break down and a time to build up; ⁴ a time to weep and a time to laugh; a time to mourn and a time to dance; ⁵ a time to throw away stones and a time to gather stones; a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing; ⁶ a time to seek and a time to lose; a time to keep and a time to throw away; ⁷ a time to tear and a time to sew; a time to be silent and a time to speak; ⁸ a time to love and a time to hate; a time for war and a time for peace. ⁹ What does the worker gain in his toil? ¹⁰ I have seen the busyness God gives to _⌊humans_⌋* to preoccupy* them. ¹¹ He has made everything suitable in its time. He also has put _⌊the past_⌋* in their hearts, yet no one can grasp what God does from the beginning to the end. ¹² So I realized that there is _⌊nothing better_⌋* for them than to _⌊rejoice and enjoy themselves_⌋* during their lives. ¹³ And for anyone to eat and drink, that is, _⌊to enjoy the fruit of all his toil_⌋,* this also is a gift of God. ¹⁴ I know everything God does endures forever; nothing can be added to it, and nothing can be taken from it, for God so acts that humans* might stand in awe before him. ¹⁵ What is—it already was, and what will be—it already is, for _⌊God will do what he has done._⌋* ¹⁶ I saw something else under the sun: instead of justice there was evil; instead of righteousness there was wickedness. ¹⁷ So I said _⌊to myself_⌋,* "God will surely judge the righteous and the wicked, for he has appointed* a time of judgment for every deed and every work." ¹⁸ I said to myself concerning _⌊humans_⌋,* "God sifts* them in order to show* them that they are like beasts." ¹⁹ For the fate of _⌊humans_⌋* and the fate of the beast is _⌊the same_⌋.* The death of the one is like the death of the other, for _⌊both are mortal_⌋.* Man has no advantage over the beast, for both are fleeting. ²⁰ Both go to one place—both came from dust and both return to dust. ²¹ For no one knows whether the spirit of a human ascends to heaven and whether the spirit of the beast descends to the ground! ²² So I concluded that there is nothing better for a person than to enjoy the fruit of his labor, for this is his lot in life. _⌊For no one knows what will happen in the future._⌋*

³⁰ I passed by the field of a lazy person, and over the vineyard of a person lacking _⌊sense_⌋;* ³¹ and behold, it was overgrown—all of it was covered with thorns, its surface with nettles, and _⌊its stone wall_⌋* was broken down. ³² Then I myself saw and my heart* considered; I looked, and I took hold of instruction:

² And do not be conformed to this age, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, so that you may approve what is the good and well-pleasing and perfect will of God.

³ Older women likewise are to be reverent in their behavior, not slanderous, not enslaved to much wine, teaching what is good, ⁴ in order that they may encourage the young women to love their husbands and to love their children, ⁵ to be self-controlled, pure, busy at home, good, being subject to their own husbands, in order that the word of God may not be slandered.

And the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters. ³ And God said, "Let there be light!" And there was light. ⁴ And God saw the light, that it was good, and God caused there to be a separation between the light and between the darkness. ⁵ And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day. ⁶ And God said, "Let there be a vaulted dome* in the midst of the waters, and _⌊let it cause a separation between the waters_⌋."* ⁷ So* God made the vaulted dome,* and he caused a separation between the waters which were under the vaulted dome* and between the waters which were over the vaulted dome.* And it was so. ⁸ And God called the vaulted dome* "heaven."* And there was evening, and there was morning, a second day. ⁹ And God said, "Let the waters under heaven* be gathered to one place, and let the dry ground appear." And it was so. ¹⁰ And God called the dry ground "earth," and he called the collection of the waters "seas." And God saw that it was good. ¹¹ And God said, "Let the earth produce green plants that will bear seed—fruit trees bearing fruit _⌊in which there is seed_⌋*—according to its* kind, on the earth." And it was so. ¹² And the earth brought forth green plants bearing seed according to its* kind, and trees bearing fruit _⌊in which there was seed_⌋* according to its* kind. And God saw that it was good. ¹³ And there was evening and there was morning, a third day. ¹⁴ And God said, "Let there be lights* in the vaulted dome* of heaven* _⌊to separate day from night_⌋,* and let them be as signs and for appointed times, and for days and years, ¹⁵ and they shall be as lights* in the vaulted dome* of heaven* to give light on the earth." And it was so. ¹⁶ And God made two lights,* the greater light* to rule* the day and the smaller light* to rule* the night, and the stars. ¹⁷ And God placed them in the vaulted dome* of heaven* to give light on the earth ¹⁸ and to rule over the day and over the night, and to _⌊separate light from darkness_⌋.* And God saw that it was good. ¹⁹ And there was evening and there was morning, a fourth day. ²⁰ And God said, "Let the waters swarm with swarms of living creatures, and let birds fly over the earth across the face of the vaulted dome* of heaven.* ²¹ So* God created the great sea creatures and every living creature that moves, with which the waters swarm, according to their kind, and every bird with wings according to its* kind. And God saw that it was good. ²² And God blessed them, saying, "Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let the birds multiply on the earth." ²³ And there was evening, and there was morning, a fifth day. ²⁴ And God said, "Let the earth bring forth living creatures according to their kind: cattle and moving things, and wild animals* according to their kind." And it was so. ²⁵ So* God made wild animals* according to their kind and the cattle according to their kind, and every creeping thing of the earth according to its* kind. And God saw that it was good. ²⁶ And God said, "Let us make humankind in* our image and according to* our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of heaven,* and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every moving thing that moves upon the earth." ²⁷ So* God created humankind in* his image, in* the likeness of God he created him,* male and female he created them. ²⁸ And God blessed them, and God said to them, "Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it, and rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of heaven,* and over every animal that moves upon the earth." ²⁹ And God said, "Look—I am giving to you every plant that bears seed which is on the face of the whole earth, and every kind of tree _⌊that bears fruit_⌋.* They shall be yours as food." ³⁰ And to every kind of animal of the earth and to every bird of heaven,* and to everything that moves upon the earth in which there is life I am giving every green plant as food." And it was so. ³¹ And God saw everything that he had made and, behold, it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning, a sixth day.

⁴⁰ But let all things be done decently and according to proper procedure.
