³ Put not your trust in princes, nor in the son of man, in whom there is no help. ⁴ His breath goeth forth, he returneth to his dust; in that very day his thoughts perish. ⁵ Happy is he whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the LORD his God, ⁶ Who made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is; who keepeth truth for ever; ⁷ Who executeth justice for the oppressed; who giveth bread to the hungry. The LORD looseth the prisoners; ⁸ The LORD openeth the eyes of the blind; the LORD raiseth up them that are bowed down; the LORD loveth the righteous; ⁹ The LORD preserveth the strangers; He upholdeth the fatherless and the widow; but the way of the wicked He maketh crooked. ¹⁰ The LORD will reign for ever, Thy God, O Zion, unto all generations. Hallelujah.

²¹ And He changeth the times and the seasons; He removeth kings, and setteth up kings; He giveth wisdom unto the wise, and knowledge to them that know understanding;

¹ I exhort therefore, first of all, that supplications, prayers, intercessions, thanksgivings, be made for all men, ² for kings and all that are in high place, that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and gravity.

¹⁴ When thou art come unto the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee, and shalt possess it, and shalt dwell therein; and shalt say: 'I will set a king over me, like all the nations that are round about me'; ¹⁵ thou shalt in any wise set him king over thee, whom the LORD thy God shall choose; one from among thy brethren shalt thou set king over thee; thou mayest not put a foreigner over thee, who is not thy brother. ¹⁶ Only he shall not multiply horses to himself, nor cause the people to return to Egypt, to the end that he should multiply horses; forasmuch as the LORD hath said unto you: 'Ye shall henceforth return no more that way.' ¹⁷ Neither shall he multiply wives to himself, that his heart turn not away; neither shall he greatly multiply to himself silver and gold. ¹⁸ And it shall be, when he sitteth upon the throne of his kingdom, that he shall write him a copy of this law in a book, out of that which is before the priests the Levites. ¹⁹ And it shall be with him, and he shall read therein all the days of his life; that he may learn to fear the LORD his God, to keep all the words of this law and these statutes, to do them; ²⁰ that his heart be not lifted up above his brethren, and that he turn not aside from the commandment, to the right hand, or to the left; to the end that he may prolong his days in his kingdom, he and his children, in the midst of Israel.

² When the righteous are increased, the people rejoice; but when the wicked beareth rule, the people sigh.

¹⁷ And Moses' father-in-law said unto him: 'The thing that thou doest is not good. ¹⁸ Thou wilt surely wear away, both thou, and this people that is with thee; for the thing is too heavy for thee; thou art not able to perform it thyself alone. ¹⁹ Hearken now unto my voice, I will give thee counsel, and God be with thee: be thou for the people before God, and bring thou the causes unto God. ²⁰ And thou shalt teach them the statutes and the laws, and shalt show them the way wherein they must walk, and the work that they must do. ²¹ Moreover thou shalt provide out of all the people able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating unjust gain; and place such over them, to be rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens.

² A wise man's understanding is at his right hand; but a fool's understanding at his left.

¹ Let every soul be in subjection to the higher powers; for there is no power but of God, and the powers that be are ordained of God.

¹ Put them in mind to be in subjection to rulers, to authorities, to be obedient, to be ready unto every good work, ² to speak evil of no man, not to be contentious, to be gentle, showing all meekness toward all men. ³ For we also once were foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving diverse lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, hating one another. ⁴ But when the kindness of God our Saviour, and his love toward man, appeared, ⁵ not by works done in righteousness, which we did ourselves, but according to his mercy he saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit, ⁶ which he poured out upon us richly, through Jesus Christ our Saviour, ⁷ that, being justified by his grace, we might be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life. ⁸ Faithful is the saying, and concerning these things I desire that thou affirm confidently, to the end that they who have believed God may be careful to maintain good works. These things are good and profitable unto men: ⁹ but shun foolish questionings, and genealogies, and strifes, and fightings about law, for they are unprofitable and vain. ¹⁰ A factious man after a first and second admonition refuse, ¹¹ knowing that such a one is perverted, and sinneth, being self-condemned.

¹ Let every soul be in subjection to the higher powers; for there is no power but of God, and the powers that be are ordained of God. ² Therefore he that resisteth the power, withstandeth the ordinance of God; and they that withstand shall receive to themselves judgment. ³ For rulers are not a terror to the good work, but to the evil. And wouldest thou have no fear of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise from the same: ⁴ for he is a minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid, for he beareth not the sword in vain; for he is a minister of God, an avenger for wrath to him that doeth evil. ⁵ Wherefore ye must needs be in subjection, not only because of the wrath, but also for conscience' sake. ⁶ For this cause ye pay tribute also, for they are ministers of God's service, attending continually upon this very thing. ⁷ Render to all their dues; tribute to whom tribute is due, custom to whom custom, fear to whom fear, honor to whom honor. ⁸ Owe no man anything, save to love one another; for he that loveth his neighbor hath fulfilled the law. ⁹ For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not covet, and if there be any other commandment, it is summed up in this word, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. ¹⁰ Love worketh no ill to his neighbor; love therefore is the fulfilment of the law. ¹¹ And this, knowing the season, that already it is time for you to awake out of sleep; for now is salvation nearer to us than when we first believed. ¹² The night is far spent, and the day is at hand; let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armor of light. ¹³ Let us walk becomingly, as in the day, not in revelling and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and jealousy. ¹⁴ But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.

¹³ Get you, from each one of your tribes, wise men, and understanding, and full of knowledge, and I will make them heads over you.'
