Psalms 51:1-19

1 (51:1) For the Leader. A Psalm of David; (51:2) When Nathan the prophet came unto him, after he had gone in to Bath-sheba. (51:3) Be gracious unto me, O God, according to Thy mercy; according to the multitude of Thy compassions blot out my transgressions. 2 (51:4) Wash me thoroughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. 3 (51:5) For I know my transgressions; and my sin is ever before me. 4 (51:6) Against Thee, Thee only, have I sinned, and done that which is evil in Thy sight; that Thou mayest be justified when Thou speakest, and be in the right when Thou judgest. 5 (51:7) Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me. 6 (51:8) Behold, Thou desirest truth in the inward parts; make me, therefore, to know wisdom in mine inmost heart. 7 (51:9) Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. 8 (51:10) Make me to hear joy and gladness; that the bones which Thou hast crushed may rejoice. 9 (51:11) Hide Thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities. 10 (51:12) Create me a clean heart, O God; and renew a stedfast spirit within me. 11 (51:13) Cast me not away from Thy presence; and take not Thy holy spirit from me. 12 (51:14) Restore unto me the joy of Thy salvation; and let a willing spirit uphold me. 13 (51:15) Then will I teach transgressors Thy ways; and sinners shall return unto Thee. 14 (51:16) Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, Thou God of my salvation; so shall my tongue sing aloud of Thy righteousness. 15 (51:17) O Lord, open Thou my lips; and my mouth shall declare Thy praise. 16 (51:18) For Thou delightest not in sacrifice, else would I give it; Thou hast no pleasure in burnt-offering. 17 (51:19) The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and a contrite heart, O God, Thou wilt not despise. 18 (51:20) Do good in Thy favour unto Zion; build Thou the walls of Jerusalem. 19 (51:21) Then wilt Thou delight in the sacrifices of righteousness, in burnt-offering and whole offering; then will they offer bullocks upon Thine altar.

Isaiah 66:1-2

1 Thus saith the LORD: The heaven is My throne, and the earth is My footstool; where is the house that ye may build unto Me? And where is the place that may be My resting-place? 2 For all these things hath My hand made, and so all these things came to be, saith the LORD; but on this man will I look, even on him that is poor and of a contrite spirit, and trembleth at My word.

Jeremiah 18:1-23

1 The word which came to Jeremiah from the LORD, saying: 2 'Arise, and go down to the potter's house, and there I will cause thee to hear My words.' 3 Then I went down to the potter's house, and, behold, he was at his work on the wheels. 4 And whensoever the vessel that he made of the clay was marred in the hand of the potter, he made it again another vessel, as seemed good to the potter to make it. 5 Then the word of the LORD came to me, saying: 6 'O house of Israel, cannot I do with you as this potter? saith the LORD. Behold, as the clay in the potter's hand, so are ye in My hand, O house of Israel. 7 At one instant I may speak concerning a nation, and concerning a kingdom, to pluck up and to break down and to destroy it; 8 but if that nation turn from their evil, because of which I have spoken against it, I repent of the evil that I thought to do unto it. 9 And at one instant I may speak concerning a nation, and concerning a kingdom, to build and to plant it; 10 but if it do evil in My sight, that it hearken not to My voice, then I repent of the good, wherewith I said I would benefit it. 11 Now therefore do thou speak to the men of Judah, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, saying: Thus saith the LORD: Behold, I frame evil against you, and devise a device against you; return ye now every one from his evil way, and amend your ways and your doings. 12 But they say: There is no hope; but we will walk after our own devices, and we will do every one after the stubbornness of his evil heart.' 13 Therefore thus saith the LORD: Ask ye now among the nations, who hath heard such things; the virgin of Israel hath done a very horrible thing. 14 Doth the snow of Lebanon fail from the rock of the field? or are the strange cold flowing waters plucked up? 15 For My people hath forgotten Me, they offer unto vanity; and they have been made to stumble in their ways, in the ancient paths, to walk in bypaths, in a way not cast up; 16 To make their land an astonishment, and a perpetual hissing; every one that passeth thereby shall be astonished, and shake his head. 17 I will scatter them as with an east wind before the enemy; I will look upon their back, and not their face, in the day of their calamity. 18 Then said they: 'Come, and let us devise devices against Jeremiah; for instruction shall not perish from the priest, nor counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophet. Come, and let us smite him with the tongue, and let us not give heed to any of his words.' 19 Give heed to me, O LORD, and hearken to the voice of them that contend with me. 20 Shall evil be recompensed for good? For they have digged a pit for my soul. Remember how I stood before Thee to speak good for them, to turn away Thy wrath from them. 21 Therefore deliver up their children to the famine, and hurl them to the power of the sword; and let their wives be bereaved of their children, and widows; and let their men be slain of death, and their young men smitten of the sword in battle. 22 Let a cry be heard from their houses, when thou shalt bring a troop suddenly upon them; for they have digged a pit to take me, and hid snares for my feet. 23 Yet, LORD, Thou knowest all their counsel against me to slay me; forgive not their iniquity, neither blot out their sin from Thy sight; but let them be made to stumble before Thee; Deal Thou with them in the time of Thine anger.

2 and he opened his mouth and taught them, saying, 3 Blessed are the poor in spirit; for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 4 Blessed are they that mourn; for they shall be comforted. 5 Blessed are the meek; for they shall inherit the earth. 6 Blessed are they that hunger and thirst after righteousness; for they shall be filled. 7 Blessed are the merciful; for they shall obtain mercy. 8 Blessed are the pure in heart; for they shall see God. 9 Blessed are the peacemakers; for they shall be called sons of God. 10 Blessed are they that have been persecuted for righteousness' sake; for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 11 Blessed are ye when men shall reproach you, and persecute you, and say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. 12 Rejoice, and be exceeding glad; for great is your reward in heaven; for so persecuted they the prophets that were before you.

2 Corinthians 1:8-10

8 For we would not have you ignorant, brethren, concerning our affliction which befell us in Asia, that we were weighed down exceedingly, beyond our power, insomuch that we despaired even of life: 9 yea, we ourselves have had the sentence of death within ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves, but in God who raiseth the dead: 10 who delivered us out of so great a death, and will deliver; on whom we have set our hope that he will also still deliver us,
