⁵² Jesus told him, “Put your sword back in its place! Everyone who uses a sword will be killed by a sword. ⁵³ Don’t you think that I could call on my Father, and he would send me more than twelve legions of angels now? ⁵⁴ How, then, would the Scriptures be fulfilled that say this must happen?”

²⁵ “Whenever you stand up to pray, forgive whatever you have against anyone, so that your Father in heaven will forgive your sins.

⁴ For they are God’s servants, working for your good.
But if you do what is wrong, you should be afraid, for it is not without reason that they bear the sword. Indeed, they are God’s servants to administer punishment to anyone who does wrong.

¹⁸ If possible, so far as it depends on you, live in peace with all people.

²³ When he was insulted, he did not retaliate. When he suffered, he did not threaten. It was his habit to commit the matter to the one who judges fairly.

¹⁹ You must understand this, my dear brothers. Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry. ²⁰ For human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires.

¹⁵ Make sure that no one pays back evil for evil. Instead, always pursue what is good for each other and for everyone else.

¹⁷ Do not pay anyone back evil for evil, but focus your thoughts on what is right in the sight of all people.

¹⁸ “You are not to seek vengeance or hold a grudge against the descendants of your people. Instead, love your neighbor as yourself. I am the LORD.”

²⁹ Don’t say, “I’ll do to him like he did to me, I’ll be sure to pay him back for what he did.”

³⁸ Teaching about Retaliation
“You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’ ³⁹ But I tell you not to resist an evildoer. On the contrary, whoever slaps you on the right cheek, turn the other to him as well.

⁹ Do not pay others back evil for evil or insult for insult. Instead, keep blessing them, because you were called to inherit a blessing.

¹⁷ Do not pay anyone back evil for evil, but focus your thoughts on what is right in the sight of all people. ¹⁸ If possible, so far as it depends on you, live in peace with all people. ¹⁹ Do not take revenge, dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath. For it is written, “Vengeance belongs to me. I will pay them back, declares the Lord.” ²⁰ But “if your enemy is hungry, feed him. For if he is thirsty, give him a drink. If you do this, you will pile burning coals on his head.” ²¹ Do not be conquered by evil, but conquer evil with good.
