Bible verses about "understanding" | ASV

Proverbs 20:5

5 Counsel in the heart of man is [like] deep water;
But a man of understanding will draw it out.

Ecclesiastes 3:1-22

1 For everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under heaven: 2 a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted; 3 a time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; 4 a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; 5 a time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; 6 a time to seek, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away; 7 a time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; 8 a time to love, and a time to hate; a time for war, and a time for peace. 9 What profit hath he that worketh in that wherein he laboreth? 10 I have seen the travail which God hath given to the sons of men to be exercised therewith. 11 He hath made everything beautiful in its time: also he hath set eternity in their heart, yet so that man cannot find out the work that God hath done from the beginning even to the end. 12 I know that there is nothing better for them, than to rejoice, and to do good so long as they live. 13 And also that every man should eat and drink, and enjoy good in all his labor, is the gift of God. 14 I know that, whatsoever God doeth, it shall be for ever: nothing can be put to it, nor anything taken from it; and God hath done it, that men should fear before him. 15 That which is hath been long ago; and that which is to be hath long ago been: and God seeketh again that which is passed away.
16 And moreover I saw under the sun, in the place of justice, that wickedness was there; and in the place of righteousness, that wickedness was there. 17 I said in my heart, God will judge the righteous and the wicked; for there is a time there for every purpose and for every work. 18 I said in my heart, [It is] because of the sons of men, that God may prove them, and that they may see that they themselves are [but as] beasts. 19 For that which befalleth the sons of men befalleth beasts; even one thing befalleth them: as the one dieth, so dieth the other; yea, they have all one breath; and man hath no preeminence above the beasts: for all is vanity. 20 All go unto one place; all are of the dust, and all turn to dust again. 21 Who knoweth the spirit of man, whether it goeth upward, and the spirit of the beast, whether it goeth downward to the earth? 22 Wherefore I saw that there is nothing better, than that a man should rejoice in his works; for that is his portion: for who shall bring him [back] to see what shall be after him?

Matthew 6:33

33 But seek ye first his kingdom, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

James 1:2-4

2 Count it all joy, my brethren, when ye fall into manifold temptations; 3 knowing that the proving of your faith worketh patience. 4 And let patience have [its] perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, lacking in nothing.

Proverbs 3:5

5 Trust in Jehovah with all thy heart,
And lean not upon thine own understanding:

Proverbs 3:13-18

13 Happy is the man that findeth wisdom,
And the man that getteth understanding. 14 For the gaining of it is better than the gaining of silver,
And the profit thereof than fine gold. 15 She is more precious than rubies:
And none of the things thou canst desire are to be compared unto her. 16 Length of days is in her right hand;
In her left hand are riches and honor. 17 Her ways are ways of pleasantness,
And all her paths are peace. 18 She is a tree of life to them that lay hold upon her:
And happy is every one that retaineth her.

Proverbs 12:1-28

1 Whoso loveth correction loveth knowledge;
But he that hateth reproof is brutish. 2 A good man shall obtain favor of Jehovah;
But a man of wicked devices will he condemn. 3 A man shall not be established by wickedness;
But the root of the righteous shall not be moved. 4 A worthy woman is the crown of her husband;
But she that maketh ashamed is as rottenness in his bones. 5 The thoughts of the righteous are just;
[But] the counsels of the wicked are deceit. 6 The words of the wicked are of lying in wait for blood;
But the mouth of the upright shall deliver them. 7 The wicked are overthrown, and are not;
But the house of the righteous shall stand. 8 A man shall be commended according to his wisdom;
But he that is of a perverse heart shall be despised. 9 Better is he that is lightly esteemed, and hath a servant,
Than he that honoreth himself, and lacketh bread. 10 A righteous man regardeth the life of his beast;
But the tender mercies of the wicked are cruel. 11 He that tilleth his land shall have plenty of bread;
But he that followeth after vain [persons] is void of understanding. 12 The wicked desireth the net of evil men;
But the root of the righteous yieldeth [fruit]. 13 In the transgression of the lips is a snare to the evil man;
But the righteous shall come out of trouble. 14 A man shall be satisfied with good by the fruit of his mouth;
And the doings of a man's hands shall be rendered unto him. 15 The way of a fool is right in his own eyes;
But he that is wise hearkeneth unto counsel. 16 A fool's vexation is presently known;
But a prudent man concealeth shame. 17 He that uttereth truth showeth forth righteousness;
But a false witness, deceit. 18 There is that speaketh rashly like the piercings of a sword;
But the tongue of the wise is health. 19 The lip of truth shall be established for ever;
But a lying tongue is but for a moment. 20 Deceit is in the heart of them that devise evil;
But to the counsellors of peace is joy. 21 There shall no mischief happen to the righteous;
But the wicked shall be filled with evil. 22 Lying lips are an abomination to Jehovah;
But they that deal truly are his delight. 23 A prudent man concealeth knowledge;
But the heart of fools proclaimeth foolishness. 24 The hand of the diligent shall bear rule;
But the slothful shall be put under taskwork. 25 Heaviness in the heart of a man maketh it stoop;
But a good word maketh it glad. 26 The righteous is a guide to his neighbor;
But the way of the wicked causeth them to err. 27 The slothful man roasteth not that which he took in hunting;
But the precious substance of men [is to] the diligent. 28 In the way of righteousness is life;
And in the pathway thereof there is no death.

Proverbs 4:7

7 Wisdom [is] the principal thing; [therefore] get wisdom;
Yea, with all thy getting get understanding.

Colossians 4:6

6 Let your speech be always with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer each one.

2 Timothy 3:1-17

1 But know this, that in the last days grievous times shall come. 2 For men shall be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, haughty, railers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, 3 without natural affection, implacable, slanderers, without self-control, fierce, no lovers of good, 4 traitors, headstrong, puffed up, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God; 5 holding a form of godliness, but having denied the power thereof: from these also turn away. 6 For of these are they that creep into houses, and take captive silly women laden with sins, led away by divers lusts, 7 ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth. 8 And even as Jannes and Jambres withstood Moses, so do these also withstand the truth; men corrupted in mind, reprobate concerning the faith. 9 But they shall proceed no further: for their folly shall be evident unto all men, as theirs also came to be. 10 But thou didst follow my teaching, conduct, purpose, faith, longsuffering, love, patience, 11 persecutions, sufferings; what things befell me at Antioch, at Iconium, at Lystra; what persecutions I endured: and out of them all the Lord delivered me. 12 Yea, and all that would live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution. 13 But evil men and impostors shall wax worse and worse, deceiving and being deceived. 14 But abide thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them; 15 and that from a babe thou hast known the sacred writings which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. 16 Every scripture inspired of God [is] also profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for instruction which is in righteousness: 17 that the man of God may be complete, furnished completely unto every good work.

Proverbs 17:27

27 He that spareth his words hath knowledge;
And he that is of a cool spirit is a man of understanding.

Proverbs 2:2-5

2 So as to incline thine ear unto wisdom,
And apply thy heart to understanding; 3 Yea, if thou cry after discernment,
And lift up thy voice for understanding; 4 If thou seek her as silver,
And search for her as for hid treasures: 5 Then shalt thou understand the fear of Jehovah,
And find the knowledge of God.

Psalms 119:130

130 The opening of thy words giveth light;
It giveth understanding unto the simple.

Proverbs 14:29

29 He that is slow to anger is of great understanding;
But he that is hasty of spirit exalteth folly.

Proverbs 18:2

2 A fool hath no delight in understanding,
But only that his heart may reveal itself.
