⁴³ Wo unto you pharisees; for ye love the chief seat in synagogues, and salutations in public places.

⁶ and love the uppermost places at feasts, ⁷ and the chief seats in the synagogues, and salutations in public assemblies, and to be called by men Rabbi, Rabbi.

³⁸ And He said unto them as He was teaching them, Beware of the scribes, who love to walk in long robes, and salutations in public-places, ³⁹ and the chief seats in the synagogues, and uppermost places at feasts;

⁷ And He spake a parable to those that were invited, observing how they chose the chief seats, saying unto them, ⁸ When thou art invited by any one to a wedding, do not sit down in the uppermost place, least one more honorable than thou be invited by him; ⁹ and he who invited thee and him, should come and say to thee, Give place to this person, and then thou begin with shame to take the lowest place. ¹⁰ But when thou art invited, go and sit down at the lowest place, that, when he who invited thee cometh, he may say to thee, Friend, go up higher: then wilt thou have honor before them that sit at table with thee: ¹¹ for whosoever exalteth himself shall be humbled, and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

¹⁰ be tenderly affected with brotherly love to each other, in honor preferring one another:

³ Do nothing through strife or vain-glory, but in lowliness of mind each esteeming others better than themselves.

² For if there come into your synagogue a man with a gold ring in fine clothes, and there come in also a poor man in a mean habit; ³ and ye turn your eyes toward him that weareth the fine clothes, and say to him, Sit thou here in an honorable place; and say to the poor man, Stand thou there, or sit here under my footstool: ⁴ do ye not make a partial difference within yourselves, and become judges that reason wickedly?

⁹ I wrote to the church: but Diotrephes, who affects the pre-eminence among them, doth not receive us.
