²¹ For unto this are ye called; because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that ye might follow his steps.

³⁸ and he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me.

²⁹ Take but my yoke upon you, and learn of me, (for I am meek and lowly in heart,) and ye shall find refreshment to your souls:

²⁴ Then said Jesus to his disciples, If any one is willing to come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me:

³⁴ And calling the people and his disciples to Him, He said unto them, Whosoever is willing to come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me: ³⁵ for he that would save his life, shall lose it; but he that would lose his life for my sake and the gospel's, shall save it.

²³ And He said unto them all, if any one is willing to come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me: ²⁴ for he that would save his life shall lose it, but he that would lose his life for my sake shall save it. ²⁵ For what is a man profited, if he gain the whole world, and lose himself, or be destroyed?

²⁶ so he turned and said to them, If any man come to me, and does not comparatively hate his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea and his own life too, he cannot be my disciple. ²⁷ And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and follow me, cannot be my disciple.

²⁶ Was not the Messiah to suffer these things, and so to enter into his glory?

¹⁵ For I have given you an example, that ye also should do as I have done to you.

³³ These things have I spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have trouble: but be of good courage, I have overcome the world.

¹⁶ for I will shew him how great sufferings he must endure for my name.

²² confirming the souls of the disciples, exhorting them to continue in the faith, and telling them that through many afflictions we must enter into the kingdom of God.

³ opening them and shewing, that the Messiah was to suffer and rise again from the dead: and that this is the Christ even, Jesus, whom, said he, I preach unto you.

²⁹ for those whom he foreknew, He also predetermined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that He might be as the first-born among many brethren: and whom He before ordained, these He also called;

¹ Be ye then imitators of me, as I also am of Christ.

² even as Christ hath loved us, and given Himself up for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for an odor of sweet perfume.

⁵ Let the same mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:

³ that no one might be shaken by these afflictions: for ye yourselves know that we are appointed hereunto.

² For ye know what commandments we gave you from the Lord Jesus.

¹² And indeed all, that are desirous to live godly in Christ Jesus, shall suffer persecution.

¹⁰ For it became Him for whom are all things, and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons to glory, to make the author of their salvation perfect by sufferings:

²⁰ who was indeed appointed before the foundation of the world, but manifested in these last times, for your sakes,

²⁴ Who Himself bare our sins in his own body on the cross, that we being dead to sins, might live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye are healed.

⁹ not returning evil for evil, or reproach for reproach: but on the contrary blessing even those that curse you: knowing ye are called unto this, that ye may obtain a blessing.

¹⁸ As Christ also once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust (that He might introduce us to God) being indeed put to death in the flesh, but raised to life by the Spirit:

¹ Seeing therefore Christ hath suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves likewise with the same thought, that he, who hath mortified the flesh, hath ceased from sin;

⁶ He that saith, he abideth in Him, ought himself also so to walk even as He walked.

¹⁶ In this we know his love, that He laid down his life for us: and we should be ready to lay down our lives for the brethren.

¹¹ And they have overcome him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony, and they loved not their life unto the death.
