¹² so that you may live influentially with the outsiders, and not be dependent on anybody.

¹¹ Then He said to them, "To you the secret of the kingdom of God has been entrusted, but to those who are on the outside everything is presented in stories, so that

¹⁷ Stop returning evil for evil to anyone. Always see to it that your affairs are right in the sight of everybody.

¹³ Let us live becomingly for people who are in the light of day, not in carousing and drunkenness, nor in sexual immorality and licentiousness, nor in quarreling and jealousy.

¹² For what right have I to judge outsiders? Is it not for you to judge those who are inside the church, ¹³ but for God to judge those who are outside? You must expel that wicked person from your membership.

²⁰ I am arranging it so that no one can blame me in the matter of this munificent fund that is being handled by me. ²¹ For I am taking the precaution to do what is right, not only in the sight of the Lord but also in the eyes of men.

⁷ Did I do wrong in taking a lowly place to let you have an exalted one, in that I preached the good news about God to you without accepting any pay? ⁸ I sponged on other churches by taking pay from them to render service to you, ⁹ and when I was with you and needed money, I never burdened a single one of you for a cent, for the brothers came from Macedonia and supplied what I needed. And so I kept myself, as I shall always do, from being a burden to you in any way.

⁸ Now, brothers, practice thinking on what is true, what is honorable, what is right, what is pure, what is lovable, what is high-toned, yes, on everything that is excellent or praiseworthy.

⁵ Practice living prudently in your relations with outsiders, making the most of your opportunities.

²² Continue to abstain from every sort of evil.

⁷ He must also have a good reputation with outsiders, or else he may incur reproach and fall into the devil's trap.

⁸ let your message be wholesome and unobjectionable, so that our opponent may be put to shame at having nothing evil to say about us. ⁹ Continue urging slaves to practice perfect submission to their masters and to give them perfect satisfaction, ¹⁰ to stop resisting them and stealing from them, but to show such perfect fidelity as to adorn, in everything they do, the teaching of God our Saviour.

¹² Keep on living upright lives among the heathen, so that, when they slander you as evildoers, by what they see of your good deeds they may come to praise God on the judgment day.

¹ You married women, in the same way, must be submissive to your husbands, so that, if any of them do not believe the message, they may be won over without a word through the living of the wives,

¹⁶ and keep your conscience clear, so that those who bitterly abuse your excellent conduct as Christians may be ashamed of slandering you. ¹⁷ For it is better, if the will of God should plan it so, to suffer for doing right than for doing wrong.
