¹⁴ I have given them thy word and the world has hated them, because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world.

²⁴ The scholar is not above his teacher, nor the servant above his master. ²⁵ It is sufficient for the scholar to fare like his teacher and for the servant to fare like his master. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebul, how much more the members of his household.

⁷ The world cannot hate you, but it hates me, because I testify about it that its ways are wicked.

¹⁸ "If the world hates you, you know that it hated me before it hated you. ¹⁹ If you were of the world the world would love its own. But you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world. For this reason the world hates you. ²⁰ Remember the word that I said to you, 'The servant is not superior to his Master.' If they have persecuted me, they will persecute you also. If they have kept my word, they will keep yours also. ²¹ But all these things they will do to you because of my name, because they do not know him who sent me.

⁴ In these they think it strange that you are not running with them to the same excess of profligacy, and they slander you. ⁵ But they will have to give account to him who holds himself ready to judge the living and the dead.

¹² Not like Cain, who was of the Wicked One and killed his brother. And for what reason did he kill him? Because his own deeds were wicked and his brother's righteous.

⁵ They belong to the world and for that reason they speak as the world speaks and the world listens to them. ⁶ We are of God. Whoever knows God listens to us: whoever is not of God does not listen to us. In this way we know the spirit of truth and the spirit of error.

¹⁹ We know that we are of God and the whole world lies in the Evil One. ²⁰ We know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding to know him who is true, and we are in him who is true and in his Son, Jesus Christ. This is the true God and life eternal.
