¹ Wine is a mocker! Strong drink leads to brawls. He who is intoxicated by it is not wise.

²¹ He drank some of its wine. He became drunk and lay undressed inside his tent. ²² Ham, father of Canaan, saw his father’s nakedness and told his two brothers outside. ²³ Shem and Japheth took a garment and laid it across their shoulders. Then they walked in backward and covered their father’s nakedness. Their faces were turned the other way so that they would not see their father’s nakedness.

³¹ The older daughter said to her sister: »Our father is getting old. There are no men in the whole world to marry us so we can have children. ³² »Come, let us get our father drunk. Then we can sleep with him and have children by him.« ³³ That night they gave him wine to drink. The older daughter had intercourse with him. But he was so drunk that he did not know it. ³⁴ The next day the older daughter said to her sister: »I slept with him last night. Let us get him drunk again tonight, and you sleep with him. Then each of us will have a child by our father.« ³⁵ So that night they got him drunk. The younger daughter had intercourse with him. Again he was so drunk that he did not know it. ³⁶ Both of Lot’s daughters became pregnant by their own father.

³⁶ When Abigail came to Nabal, he was holding a banquet in his home. It was like a king’s banquet. He was in a good mood and very drunk, so she did not tell him anything until dawn. ³⁷ In the morning after the effects of the wine wore off his wife told him what had happened. Nabal had a stroke. He could not move. ³⁸ Ten days later Jehovah made him sicker and Nabal died.

¹³ David invited him for dinner. Uriah ate with David and drank so much that he got drunk. However he still did not go home. He went out and slept on his mat near the palace guards.

¹⁶ In the middle of the day they went out. The Syrians (Aramaeans) went in flight with Israel after them. Benhadad the king of Aram got away safely on a horse with his horsemen. ²¹ The king of Israel took the horses and the war-carriages and caused great destruction among the Syrians.

²⁹ Who has woe? Who has sorrow? Who has discord? Who has complaints? Who has wounds without cause? Who has redness of eyes? ³⁰ Those who stay long at the wine. They seek mixed wine. ³¹ Do not look on the wine when it is red, when it shines in the cup, when it goes down smoothly. ³² In the end it bites like a serpent and stings like a viper. ³³ Your eyes will see strange things and your heart (and mind) will utter perverse things. ³⁴ You will be like one who lies down in the middle of the sea; like one who lies on top of a mast. ³⁵ »They struck me but I did not become sick. They beat me and I did not feel it. When will I awake? I will seek drink yet again.«

⁴ It is not for kings, O Lemuel; it is not for kings to drink wine; nor for princes to desire strong drink.

²² You are doomed! Heroes of the wine bottle! Brave and fearless when it comes to mixing drinks!

⁷ These also stagger from wine and reel from beer. Priests and prophets stagger from beer and are befuddled with wine. They reel from beer. They stagger when seeing visions. They stumble when rendering decisions.

¹² »Come, each one cries, let me get wine! Let us drink our fill of beer! And tomorrow will be like today, or even far better.«

¹¹ Prostitution, wine and new wine take away the understanding.

⁵ »On the day of the king's celebration, the officials become drunk from the heat of wine, and the king joins mockers.

¹⁵ »Woe to anyone who gives his neighbors drink and empties his bottle. He makes them drunk and then looks on their nakedness. ¹⁶ »You are filled with shame and not glory. You drink also as one who is uncircumcised. The cup of Jehovah's right (strong) hand will come around to you. Intense shame will tarnish your glory.

¹⁰ nor thieves, nor covetous (greedy), nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortionists, will inherit the kingdom of God.

²¹ envies, drunkenness, revelries, and things like these. I forewarn you, even as I did forewarn you, that those who practice such things would not inherit the kingdom of God.

¹⁸ Do not get drunk with wine, for that is a public act of violence, but be filled with the Spirit.
