⁴ Jehovah called Samuel. He answered: »Here am I.« ⁵ He ran to Eli and said: »Here I am. You called me?« »I did not call you,« Eli replied. »Go back to bed.« So Samuel went back to bed. ⁶ Jehovah called Samuel again. Samuel got up, went to Eli, and said: »Here I am. You called me.« Eli responded: »I did not call you, son. Go back to bed.« ⁷ Samuel had no experience with Jehovah, because the word of Jehovah had not yet been revealed to him. ⁸ Jehovah called Samuel a third time. Samuel got up, went to Eli, and said: »Here I am. You called me!« Eli realized (discerned) that Jehovah was calling the boy. ⁹ »Go, lie down,« Eli told Samuel. When he calls you, say: »Speak Jehovah I am listening.« So Samuel went back to bed in his room. ¹⁰ Jehovah came and stood there. He called as he had called the other times: »Samuel! Samuel!« Samuel replied: »Speak! Your servant is listening.« ¹¹ Jehovah said to Samuel: »I will do something in Israel that will make the ears of everyone who hears it tingle. ¹² »On that day I am going to do to Eli and his family everything I said from beginning to end. ¹³ »I told him I would hand down a long lasting judgment against his household because he knew about his sons’ sin. They were cursing God but he did not restrain them. ¹⁴ »I have taken an oath concerning Eli’s family line. No offering or sacrifice will ever be able to make peace for the sins that Eli’s family committed.« ¹⁵ Samuel remained in bed until morning. Then he opened the doors of Jehovah’s house. But Samuel was afraid to tell Eli about the vision. ¹⁶ Eli called Samuel and said: »Samuel, my son.« »Here I am,« he responded. ¹⁷ »What did Jehovah tell you?« He asked. »Please do not hide it from me. May God strike you dead if you hide anything he told you from me.« ¹⁸ Then Samuel told Eli everything. Eli replied: »He is Jehovah! He will do what he thinks is right.« ¹⁹ Samuel grew up. Jehovah was with him and did not let any of his words go unfulfilled (fail). ²⁰ All Israel from Dan to Beersheba knew Samuel was Jehovah’s appointed prophet. ²¹ Jehovah continued to appear in Shiloh, since Jehovah revealed himself to Samuel in Shiloh through the word of Jehovah. And Samuel spoke to all Israel.

¹⁵ He prayed: »Jehovah of Hosts, God of Israel, you are enthroned above the angels. You alone are God of all the kingdoms of the earth. You made heaven and earth.

¹³ »Now, our God, we give you thanks, and we praise your glorious name.

² From the mouths of little children and infants, you have built a fortress against your opponents to silence the enemy and the avenger.

²¹ You are doomed! You think you are wise. You think you are so very clever.

¹⁰ Jehovah has made you drowsy. He shut your eyes in a deep sleep you prophets and visionaries. He overwhelmed your leaders. ¹¹ His message is like a sealed book to you. You say to someone read this out loud. And they respond, »We cannot read it, because it is sealed.« ¹² The illiterate say: »We cannot read it because we do not know how to read.« ¹³ »These people praise me with their words,« said Jehovah, »but they never draw near to me in their hearts (deepest thoughts). Their reverence for me comes from the repetitious tradition of men. ¹⁴ »I will do things that shock and amaze them. I will destroy the wisdom of those who claim to know and understand (discern).«

¹⁸ The deaf will be able to hear the words of the book read to them. The blind will be freed from gloom and darkness. ¹⁹ The meek, the poor, and the needy will celebrate and shout because of Jehovah, the Holy One of Israel.

¹ This is what Jehovah says: »Heaven is my throne. Earth is my footstool. Where can you people build a house or resting place for me?

⁵ »Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you. Before you were born, I set you apart for my holy purpose. I appointed you to be a prophet to the nations.« ⁶ I, Jeremiah, said: »Lord Jehovah, I do not know how to speak. I am only a child!« ⁷ Jehovah said to me: »‘Do not say, ‘I am only a child.’ You must go wherever I send you. You must say whatever I command you to say. ⁸ »Do not be afraid of people. I am with you. I will rescue you,« says Jehovah.

²³ »I thank you, and praise you, O God of my fathers. You have given me wisdom and might. You have made known to me what we desired from you. For you have made known to us the king's situation.«

³⁵ All the inhabitants of the earth are considered as nothing. He does according to his will in the army of heaven and among the inhabitants of earth. None can stop him, or say to him: ‘What do you do?’

¹¹ He responded: »You are allowed to know the divine secrets of the kingdom of heaven, but it is not for others to know. (The Greek word for »you« is plural and is applied to the disciples as a group.) ¹² »He who has shall receive more to the point of abundance. He who does not have, it shall be taken away including that which he has. ¹³ »I speak to them in illustrations (stories) (parables) (allegories), because seeing they do not see, and hearing they do not hear. They just do not understand. ¹⁴ »The prophecy of Isaiah is fulfilled. ‘By hearing, you shall hear, and shall in no way understand. By seeing you shall see, and shall in no way perceive. ¹⁵ »‘The heart of this people is callous and dull. Their ears are plugged. They cannot hear. They closed their eyes and cannot see. They cannot see nor hear nor understand with their heart. They should turn around and I would heal them.’ ¹⁶ »Happy and blessed are your eyes, for they see; and your ears, for they hear.

³ He said: »Truly I tell you, if you do not have a change of heart and become like little children, you will not go into the kingdom of heaven. ⁴ »He who humbles himself to become like this little child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

¹⁷ Jesus answered him: »Bless you, Simon son of John. This knowledge came from my Father in heaven and not from man.

¹⁶ »Have you any idea what these people are saying?« Jesus answered: »Yes. It is written, ‘From the lips of children and babies at the breast you have made your praise complete.’«

¹⁰ When he was alone his followers including the twelve asked about the illustrations. ¹¹ He told them: »The secret of the kingdom of God is given to you. Illustrations are spoken to outsiders. ¹² »So that seeing they may see and not perceive. And hearing they may hear and not understand. Otherwise they might repent and be forgiven.«

¹⁴ But when Jesus saw it he was moved with indignation. He said: »Allow the little children to come to me! Do not turn them away for they belong to the kingdom of God. ¹⁵ »Truly I tell you, he who does not receive the kingdom of God like a little child shall not enter it.« ¹⁶ He took them in his arms, put his hands upon them and blessed them.

²¹ In that same hour he rejoiced in Holy Spirit and said: »I thank you Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you did hide these things from the wise and the understanding and revealed them to babes. Father, it is pleasing in your sight. ²² »All things have been delivered to me from my Father. No one knows who the Son is except the Father. And no one knows who the Father is except the Son and those to whom the Son is willing to reveal him.« ²³ Turning to the disciples, he said privately: »Blessed are the eyes that see the things you see. ²⁴ »I tell you many prophets and kings desired to see the things you see and did not see them. To hear the things you hear and did not hear them.«

⁴² He prayed: »Father if it is your will remove this cup from me, nevertheless not my will, but your will be done.«

⁴⁸ »Have any of the rulers or the Pharisees believed in him? ⁴⁹ »This crowd does not know the law. It is contemptible«

³⁹ Jesus said: »I came into the world for this judgment that those not seeing may see and those seeing may become blind.« ⁴⁰ Those of the Pharisees who were with him heard these things, and said to him: »Are we also blind?« ⁴¹ Jesus replied: »If you were blind you would have no sin. But you say we see so your sin remains.«

³⁸ The word of Isaiah the prophet was fulfilled: »Jehovah who has believed our report? And to whom has the arm of Jehovah been revealed?« (Isaiah 53:1) ³⁹ Isaiah revealed the reason they could not believe: ⁴⁰ »He has blinded their eyes. He hardened their heart. Otherwise they would see with their eyes and perceive with their heart. Then they would turn and I would heal them.«

⁴¹ So they took away the stone. Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said: »Father, I thank you that you hear me.

²⁴ »The God that made the world and all things in it is the Lord of heaven and earth. He does not live in temples made with hands.

⁸ It is written, »God has given them the spirit of slumber, eyes that they should not see, and ears that they should not hear to this very day.« (Deuteronomy 29:4) ⁹ David says, »Let their table be made a snare, and a trap, and a stumbling block, and recompense to them. ¹⁰ »Let their eyes be darkened, that they may not see, and bow down their back always.« (Psalm 69:23)

¹⁸ For the preaching of the stake is foolishness to those who perish. It is the power of God to us who are saved. ¹⁹ It is written: »I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent.« (Isaiah 29:14) ²⁰ Where is the wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of this world? ²¹ This is the wisdom of God that the world through its wisdom did not come to know God. God was well pleased through the foolishness of the message preached to save those who believe. ²² Indeed Jews ask for signs and Greeks search for wisdom. ²³ We preach Christ impaled. It is a stumbling block to the Jews and foolishness to the nations! ²⁴ To those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, it is Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God. ²⁵ For the foolishness of God is wiser than men and the weakness of God is stronger than men. ²⁶ Consider your calling, brothers. Not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called. ²⁷ Instead God chose the foolish things of the world to confuse (shame) the wise. God chose the weak things of the world to confuse (shame) the things that are mighty. ²⁸ God also chose the base things of the world, and things which are despised, yes, and things which are not, to bring to nothing things that are. ²⁹ No human being should boast before God.

⁶ How is it we speak wisdom among those who are mature, yet not the wisdom of this age, or of the rulers of this age, who come to nothing (are doomed to destruction)? ⁷ We speak the wisdom of God in a secret, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the ages (generations and human entities) for our glory. ⁸ None of the rulers of this age knew (understood) for had they known it they would not have impaled the glorious Lord (esteemed Master).

¹⁸ Let no man deceive himself. If any man among you seems to be wise in this age, let him become a fool, that he may be wise. ¹⁹ For the wisdom of this age is foolishness with God. It is written: »He catches the wise in their own craftiness (deception).« (Job 5:13) ²⁰ And again: »Jehovah knows the thoughts of the wise, that they are vain (useless) (empty).« (Psalm 94:11)

¹⁴ Their minds were blinded. Until this day the same veil remains at the reading of the old covenant. It is not revealed to them that Christ voided it.

³ If our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who perish. ⁴ The god of this age (world) (religious, social, political, and economic arrangement) has blinded the minds of unbelievers that the light of the good news of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, should not shine on them. ⁵ We do not preach about ourselves, but about Christ Jesus as Lord. We are your servants for Jesus' sake. ⁶ God said: Light will shine out of darkness. He shined in our hearts. He gave the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face (presence) ((person) of Jesus Christ.

¹³ We always have to thank God for you, brothers. Jehovah loves you and we thank God that in the beginning he chose you to be saved through sanctification by the Spirit and faith in the truth. ¹⁴ It was for this he called you through our good news. This is so you may obtain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.
