¹³ »Have no fear Zechariah,« said the angel, »for God has heard your prayer. Your wife Elisabeth will have a son and his name will be John.

¹⁰ »This is my covenant with you and your descendants after you, the covenant you are to keep: Every male among you shall be circumcised.

¹⁹ God replied: »Yes, but your wife Sarah will bear you a son! You will call him Isaac. I will establish my covenant with him as a long lasting covenant for his descendants after him.

¹⁴ »Is anything too hard for Jehovah? At the appointed time I will return to you, according to the time of life. Sarah shall have a son!«

²¹ Isaac prayed to Jehovah for his wife because she was childless. Jehovah answered his prayer. His wife Rebekah became pregnant.

³ Jehovah’s angel appeared to her and said: »You have not been able to have children, but you will become pregnant and have a son. ⁴ »Do not drink any wine or beer, or eat any forbidden food. ⁵ »After your son is born never cut his hair. This is because from the day of his birth he will be dedicated to God as a Nazirite. He will begin the work of delivering Israel from the Philistines.«

²³ Jehovah told him: »Peace. Do not be afraid. You will not die.«

²⁰ So it was that she became pregnant and gave birth to a son. She named him Samuel. She explained: »I asked Jehovah for him.« ²¹ The time came again for Elkanah and his family to go to Shiloh and offer to Jehovah the yearly sacrifice and the special sacrifice he promised. ²² This time Hannah did not go. She told her husband: As soon as the child is weaned, I will take him to the Temple of Jehovah, where he will stay all his life. ²³ Elkanah answered: »All right, do what seems best to you. Stay at home until you have weaned him. May Jehovah make your promise come true.« So Hannah stayed at home and nursed her child.

²¹ Jehovah visited Hannah so that she conceived. She bore three sons and two daughters. At the same time the child Samuel grew before Jehovah.

¹⁶ Elisha said to her: »By this time next year you will hold a son in your arms.« »Please do not lie to me. You are a man of God!« She said. ¹⁷ Just as Elisha said, about that time the following year she gave birth to a son.

²¹ I praise you, Jehovah, because you heard me, because you have become my salvation.

⁹ He makes a childless woman a joyful mother. Praise Jehovah!

³ Children are an inheritance from Jehovah. They are a blessing from him. ⁴ The children born to a man when he is young are like arrows in the hand of a warrior. ⁵ Blessed is the man who has filled his quiver with them. He will not be put to shame when he speaks with his enemies in the city gate.

³ I slept with the prophetess. She became pregnant and gave birth to a son. Jehovah told me: »Name him Maher Shalal Hash Baz.

⁴ Jehovah said to Hosea: »Name him Jezreel. In a little while I will avenge the blood of Jezreel upon the house of Jehu. I will cause the kingdom of Israel to cease.

⁶ Gomer conceived again, and gave birth to a daughter. Jehovah said to Hosea: »Name her Loruhamah for I will no longer have mercy upon the house of Israel and I will not pardon them.

⁹ Jehovah said: »Name him Loammi for you are not my people, and I am not your God. ¹⁰ »Yet the number of the children of Israel will be like the grains of the sand of the sea, which cannot be measured or numbered. It will be said: You are the sons of the living God in the place where it was said you are not my people!

¹² Then he said: »Do not fear Daniel! From the first day that you set your heart to understand, and to humble yourself before your God, your words were heard. I have come in response to your prayer.

²¹ »She will give birth to a son, and you will name him Jesus (»Jehovah (YHWH) is salvation«), because he will save his people from their sins.«

²⁷ At once Jesus said: »It is I; do not be afraid.«

⁵ The angel spoke to the women: »I know you seek Jesus who has been impaled; do not fear.

⁶ He said to them: »Do not be amazed. Jesus the Nazarene, who has been impaled, is not here. He has risen. Behold, the place where they laid him!

³⁰ The angel said to Mary: »Do not fear for you have found favor with God.

⁶⁰ His mother spoke up and said: »He shall be called John.« ⁶¹ They all said: »None of your relatives are called by this name.« ⁶² They made signs to his father, what he would have him called. ⁶³ He asked for a writing tablet, and wrote, »His name is John.« They were all amazed.

²¹ After eight days the baby was circumcised. He was called by the name, Jesus. (Jesus: Jehovah is salvation) This was the name given by the angel before he was conceived in the womb.

³⁶ As they spoke these things he stood in their midst and said: »May you have peace.« ³⁷ But they were afraid and supposed that they saw a spirit. ³⁸ He said to them, »Why are you troubled? And why do you question in your hearts? ³⁹ »See my hands and my feet that it is I. Touch me and see. A spirit does not have flesh and bones like I have.« ⁴⁰ When he said this he showed them his hands and his feet.

³¹ »He said, ‘Cornelius, your prayer is heard and your gifts of mercy are noticed in the sight of God.
