¹³ »He told you what you must do to keep the covenant he made with you. You must obey the Ten Commandments, which he wrote on two stone tablets.

⁵ ‘If you will obey me and are faithful to the terms of my covenant, then out of all the nations you will be my own special possession, for all the earth is mine.

¹² Jehovah said to Moses: »Come up on the mountain and stay here for a while. I will give you the two stone tablets on which I have written the laws that my people must obey.«

¹⁷ To the eyes of the Israelites the appearance of the glory of Jehovah was like a consuming fire on the top of the mountain. ¹⁸ Moses entered the midst of the cloud as he went up to the mountain. He was on the mountain forty days and forty nights.

¹⁸ When God finished speaking to Moses on Mount Sinai, He gave him the two tablets of the testimony, tablets of stone, written by the finger of God.

²⁸ Moses was there with Jehovah forty days and forty nights. He did not eat bread or drink water. He wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant, the Ten Commandments (Ten Words).

⁹ »When I went up on the mountain to get the stone tablets, the tablets of the promise that Jehovah made to you, I stayed on the mountain forty days and forty nights without food or water. ¹⁰ »Then Jehovah gave me the two stone tablets inscribed by God’s finger (Holy Spirit). On them were written all the words Jehovah spoke to you from the fire on the mountain on the day of the assembly. ¹¹ »At the end of forty days and nights Jehovah gave me the two stone tablets, the tablets of the covenant.

¹ »Jehovah said to me: ‘Cut out for yourself two tablets of stone like the former ones. Come up to me on the mountain, and build an ark of wood for yourself. ² »‘I will write on the tablets the words that were on the first tablets that you shattered. You must place them in the Ark.’ ³ »I made an Ark out of acacia wood and cut out two tablets of stone like the first ones. Then I took the two tablets in my hands and went up on the mountain. ⁴ »He wrote on the tablets, like the former writing. It was the Ten Commandments (Ten Words) that Jehovah proclaimed to you on the mountain. It was from the middle of the fire on the day of the assembly. Jehovah gave them to me. ⁵ »Then I came down from the mountain and put the tablets in the Ark I had made. They are there just as Jehovah commanded me.

¹ Moses called all the people of Israel, and said: »Hear, O Israel, the regulations and laws I declare to you today. Learn them and obey them! ² »Jehovah our God made a covenant with us at Horeb. ³ »Jehovah did not make this covenant with our fathers, but with us, all of us here alive today. ⁴ »Jehovah talked with you face to face on the mountain out of the middle of the fire, ⁵ »I stood between Jehovah and you at that time, to declare to you the word of Jehovah. You were afraid because of the fire. So you would not go up onto the mountain. He said: ⁶ »‘I am Jehovah your God. I brought you out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage. ⁷ »‘Do not have any other god but me. ⁸ »‘Do not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above, or on the earth below, or that is in the waters beneath the earth: ⁹ »‘Do not bow down to them. Do not serve them! For I Jehovah your God am a totally demanding zealous God. I require exclusive devotion and punish the fathers and children who hate me to the third and fourth generation. ¹⁰ »‘I show loving kindness to thousands of generations who love me and obey my commandments. ¹¹ »‘Do not take the name of Jehovah your God in vain. Jehovah will not leave him unpunished who takes his name in vain. ¹² »‘Keep the Sabbath day to sanctify it (keep it holy), as Jehovah your God has commanded you. ¹³ »‘Do all your work in six days. ¹⁴ »‘The seventh day is the Sabbath of Jehovah your God: in it you should not do any work. Your son and daughter should not work. Your manservant and maidservant should not work. Your ox, donkey, cattle or any stranger living with you should not work. ⁷ The ministry of death was written and engraved on stones. Glory came with it so that the children of Israel could not look steadfastly upon the face of Moses. And this glory was passing away.

⁴ It had a golden incense burner. The Ark of the Covenant was completely covered with gold. It contained the golden pot that had the manna, and the rod of Aaron that had sprouted, and the tables of the covenant.

¹⁹ When Moses had spoken every precept to all the people according to the Law, he took the blood of calves and of goats, with water, and scarlet wool, and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book, and all the people, ²⁰ He said: »This is the blood of the covenant that God has presented to you.«
