¹ The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ the son of God.

¹⁷ of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: at the same time a voice was heard from heaven, saying, "This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased."

³ whereupon the tempter came to him, and said, "If thou be the Son of God, command these stones to become bread."

³³ then they that were in the ship, came and worshipped him, saying, of a truth thou art the son of God.

⁵ while he was speaking, a bright cloud surrounded them: and suddenly a voice broke out of the cloud, saying, "this is my beloved son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him."

² according as they were delivered to us by persons, who were all along eye-witnesses, and had a share in the transactions themselves: ³ I have likewise thought proper; most excellent Theophilus, to write to you a particular account; having made a very diligent inquiry into the whole matter,

³⁵ the angel answered her, "the holy spirit shall descend upon thee, and the power of the most high shall over-shadow thee: wherefore thy holy offspring shall be called the son of God.

¹⁰ but the angel said to them, be not afraid, I am only come to bring you great news, which will be matter of joy to you and to the whole world. ¹¹ for the Lord Messiah your saviour is this day born, in the city of David:

¹⁴ The Logos became incarnate, and had his tabernacle among us, being full of grace and truth; and we contemplated his glory, such glory as the Monogenes derived from the father.

³⁴ this I saw, and testify'd, that he is the son of God.

⁴⁹ Nathanael answered, rabbi, thou art the son of God, thou art the king of Israel.

¹⁶ for God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten son, that whosoever believeth in him, should not perish, but have eternal life.

⁶⁹ and we have believed and we have acknowledged that you are the Christ, the son of God.

³¹ but these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Messias, the son of God, and that believing ye might have life through his name.

¹ In my former treatise, I gave an account, O Theophilus, of all the actions and doctrine of Jesus, to the time of his assumption, ² after he had given the apostles he had chosen, the orders they were to execute by the holy spirit.

¹ Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, chosen to declare the gospel dispensation, ² which God had promised by his prophets in the holy scriptures, ³ with relation to his son Jesus Christ our Lord, who was of the lineage of David as to his body, ⁴ but as to his holy spirit miraculously declared to be the son of God, by his resurrection from the dead:

³ God having sent his own son invested with a body like that of sinful men, as a sacrifice for sin, thereby destroyed its power; which the law could not effect, human nature being in such a corrupted state.

³² he that spared not his own son, but delivered him up for us all, will he not with him likewise freely give us all things?

¹ God who at sundry times, and in divers manners, spake in time past to the fathers by the prophets, hath in these last days spoken unto us by his SON, ² whom he hath constituted heir of all things, by whom also be made the world.

¹ Concerning the Logos, the author of Life, we declare what was from the beginning, what we have heard, what we have seen with our eyes, what we have consider'd, and what has been the object of our touch. ² for the life was manifested, we have seen it, we testify of it, and denounce unto you, that eternal life which was with the father, and was manifested unto us. ³ what we have seen and heard, we declare unto you, that ye also may be of the same society with us: and truly associated with the father, and with his son Jesus Christ.

¹¹ Now what is testified, is this, that God has given to us eternal life: and this life is by his son. ¹² he that receives the son, is intitled to life; and he that does not receive the son of God, has no title to life.
