¹⁶ Do not be too much righteous, nor make yourself overly wise; why destroy yourself?

⁶ And the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and the tree was desirable to make one wise. And she took of its fruit and ate; and she also gave to her husband with her, and he ate.

¹² For foolish man takes heart, and man is born a wild ass's colt.

²⁸ And to man He said, Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom! And to turn from evil is understanding.

⁴ Do not labor to be rich, cease from your own understanding.

¹⁶ Have you found honey? Eat only your fill, lest you be satiated, and vomit it out.

¹² And more than these, my son, be warned: The making of many books has no end, and much study is the weariness of the flesh.

¹ Be careful not to do your merciful deeds before men in order to be seen by them. Otherwise, you have no reward from your Father in Heaven. ² Therefore, when you do merciful deeds, do not trumpet before you as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, so that they may be glorified by men. Truly I say to you, they have their reward. ³ But you doing merciful deeds, do not let your left know what your right hand does, ⁴ so that your merciful deeds may be in secret. And your Father seeing in secret Himself will repay you in the open. ⁵ And when you pray, you shall not be as the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the open streets so that they may be seen of men. Truly I say to you, they have their reward. ⁶ But you, when you pray, enter into your room and shutting your door, pray to your Father in secret. And your Father seeing in secret will repay you in the open. ⁷ But when you pray, do not babble vain words, as the nations; for they think that they shall be heard in their much speaking.

¹⁴ Then the disciples of John came to Him, saying, Why do we and the Pharisees fast much, and Your disciples do not fast?

² Why do your disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? For they do not wash their hands when they eat bread. ³ But answering He said to them, Why do you also transgress the command of God on account of your tradition? ⁴ For God commanded, saying, "Honor your father and mother," Ex. 20:12; Deut. 5:16 and, "The one speaking evil of father or mother, by death let him die." Ex. 21:17 ⁵ But you say, Whoever says to the father or the mother, A gift, whatever you would gain from me; ⁶ and in no way he honors his father or his mother. And you annulled the command of God on account of your tradition. ⁷ Hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy concerning you, saying: ⁸ "This people draws near to Me with their mouth, and with their lips honor Me; but their heart is far from Me. ⁹ But in vain they worship Me, teaching as doctrines the ordinances of men." Isa. 29:13

⁵ And they do all their works to be seen by men. And they make their phylacteries broad and enlarge the borders of their robes.

²³ Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you pay tithes of mint and dill and cummin, and you have left aside the weightier matters of the Law: judgment, and mercy, and faith. It was right to do these, and not to have left those aside. ²⁴ Blind guides, straining out the gnat, but swallowing the camel!

²⁹ Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you build the tombs of the prophets, and adorn the tombs of the righteous.

³⁸ Behold, "your house is left to you desolate." Jer. 22:5

¹² I fast twice in the week; I tithe all things, as many as I get.

² For I testify to them that they have zeal to God, but not according to knowledge.

²⁵ For I do not want you to be ignorant of this mystery, brothers, so that you may not be wise within yourselves, that hardness in part has happened to Israel until the fullness of the nations comes in;

³ For through the grace which is given to me, I say to everyone being among you, not to have high thoughts beyond what is right to think. But set your mind to be right-minded, even as God divided a measure of faith to each.

¹⁸ Let no one deceive himself, if anyone thinks to be wise among you in this age, let him become foolish, that he may become wise.

²⁰ And again, " The Lord knows the reasonings of the wise, that they are worthless." LXX-Psa. 93:11; MT-Psa. 94:11

⁶ according to zeal, persecuting the church; according to righteousness in Law, being blameless.

¹⁸ Let no one condemn you, delighting in humility and worship of the angels, pushing into things which he has not seen, being puffed up by the mind of his flesh without a cause,

²³ Which things indeed have a reputation of wisdom in self-imposed worship and humility, and unsparing severity of the body, not in any honor with respect to gratification of the flesh.

³ forbidding to marry, saying to abstain from foods, which God created for partaking with thanksgiving by the believers and those knowing the truth.

¹³ Who is wise and knowing among you? Let him show his works by his good behavior, in meekness of wisdom. ¹⁴ But if you have bitter jealousy and contention in your heart, do not boast and lie against the truth. ¹⁵ This is not the wisdom coming down from above, but is earthly, beastly, devilish. ¹⁶ For where jealousy and contention are, there is confusion and every foul deed. ¹⁷ But the wisdom from above is firstly truly pure, then peaceable, forbearing, yielding, full of mercy and of good fruits, not partial and not pretended.

¹⁹ And they threw dust on their heads, and cried out, weeping and mourning, saying, Woe! Woe to the great city, by which all those having ships in the sea were rich, from her costliness, because in one hour she was ruined.
