¹ When there shall be strife betweene men, and they shall come vnto iudgement, and sentence shall be giuen vpon them, and the righteous shall be iustified, and the wicked condemned,

⁶ Thou shalt not ouerthrowe the right of thy poore in his sute. ⁷ Thou shalt keepe thee farre from a false matter, and shalt not slaye the innocent and the righteous: for I will not iustifie a wicked man.

¹⁶ And I charged your iudges that same time, saying, Heare the controuersies betweene your brethren, and iudge righteously betweene euery man and his brother, and the stranger that is with him. ¹⁷ Ye shall haue no respect of person in iudgement, but shall heare the small aswell as the great: yee shall not feare the face of man: for the iudgement is Gods: and the cause that is too hard for you, bring vnto me, and I will heare it.

¹⁸ Iudges and officers shalt thou make thee in all thy cities, which the Lord thy God giueth thee, throughout thy tribes: and they shall iudge the people with righteous iudgement. ¹⁹ Wrest not thou ye Law, nor respect any person, neither take rewarde: for the reward blindeth ye eyes of the wise, and peruerteth ye worde of ye iust. ²⁰ That which is iust and right shalt thou follow, that thou maiest liue, and possesse the land which the Lord thy God giueth thee.

⁸ If there rise a matter too harde for thee in iudgement betweene blood and blood, betweene plea and plea, betweene plague and plague, in the matters of controuersie within thy gates, then shalt thou arise, and goe vp vnto the place which the Lord thy God shall chuse, ⁹ And thou shalt come vnto the Priestes of the Leuites, and vnto the iudge that shall be in those daies, and aske, and they shall shewe thee the sentence of iudgement,

¹⁷ Then both the men which striue together, shall stand before ye Lord, euen before the Priests and the Iudges, which shall be in those daies, ¹⁸ And the Iudges shall make diligent inquisition: and if the witnesse be found false, and hath giuen false witnes against his brother, ¹⁹ Then shall yee doe vnto him as hee had thought to doe vnto his brother: so thou shalt take euil away forth of the middes of thee.

³ The God of Israel spake to me, ye strength of Israel saide, Thou shalt beare rule ouer men, being iust, and ruling in the feare of God.

⁶ And said to the iudges, Take heede what ye doe: for yee execute not the iudgements of man, but of the Lord, and he will be with you in the cause and iudgement. ⁷ Wherefore nowe let the feare of the Lord be vpon you: take heede, and do it: for there is no iniquitie with the Lord our God, neither respect of persons, nor receiuing of reward. ⁸ Moreouer in Ierusalem did Iehoshaphat set of the Leuites, and of the Priests and of the chiefe of the families of Israel, for the iudgement and cause of the Lord: and they returned to Ierusale. ⁹ And he charged them, saying, Thus shall yee doe in the feare of the Lord faithfully and with a perfite heart. ¹⁰ And in euery cause that shall come to you of your brethren that dwel in their cities, betweene blood and blood, betweene law and precept, statutes and iudgements, ye shall iudge them, and admonish them that they trespasse not against the Lord, that wrath come not vpon you and vpon your brethren. This shall ye do and trespasse not.

⁷ When I went out to the gate, euen to the iudgement seat, and when I caused them to prepare my seate in the streete. ⁸ The yong men saw me, and hid themselues, and the aged arose, and stood vp. ⁹ The princes stayed talke, and layde their hand on their mouth. ¹⁰ The voyce of princes was hidde, and their tongue cleaued to the roofe of their mouth. ¹¹ And when the eare heard me, it blessed me: and when the eye sawe me, it gaue witnesse to me. ¹² For I deliuered the poore that cryed, and the fatherlesse, and him that had none to helpe him. ¹³ The blessing of him that was ready to perish, came vpon me, and I caused the widowes heart to reioyce. ¹⁴ I put on iustice, and it couered me: my iudgement was as a robe, and a crowne. ¹⁵ I was the eyes to the blinde, and I was the feete to the lame. ¹⁶ I was a father vnto the poore, and when I knewe not the cause, I sought it out diligently. ¹⁷ I brake also the chawes of the vnrighteous man, and pluckt the praye out of his teeth.

¹ To him that excelleth. Destroy not. A Psalme of David on Michtam. Is it true? O Congregation, speake ye iustly? O sonnes of men, iudge ye vprightly? ² Yea, rather ye imagine mischiefe in your heart: your hands execute crueltie vpon the earth.

² How long wil ye iudge vniustly, and accept the persons of the wicked? Selah. ³ Doe right to the poore and fatherlesse: doe iustice to the poore and needie. ⁴ Deliuer the poore and needie: saue them from the hand of the wicked.

¹⁵ He that iustifieth the wicked, and he that condemneth the iust, euen they both are abomination to the Lord.

⁸ Open thy mouth for the domme in the cause of all the children of destruction. ⁹ Open thy mouth: iudge righteously, and iudge the afflicted, and the poore.

¹⁷ Learne to doe well: seeke iudgement, relieue the oppressed: iudge the fatherlesse and defend the widowe.

²³ Thy Princes are rebellious and companions of theeues: euery one loueth giftes, and followeth after rewards: they iudge not the fatherlesse, neither doeth the widowes cause come before them.

²³ Which iustifie the wicked for a rewarde, and take away the righteousnesse of the righteous from him.

⁴ But with righteousnesse shall he iudge the poore, and with equitie shall he reprooue for the meeke of the earth: and he shall smite the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lippes shall he slay the wicked.

¹ Behold, a King shall reigne in iustice, and the princes shall rule in iudgement. ² And that man shall bee as an hiding place from the winde, and as a refuge for the tempest: as riuers of water in a drie place, and as the shadowe of a great rocke in a weary land.

¹² O house of Dauid, thus saith the Lord, Execute iudgement in the morning, and deliuer the oppressed out of the hande of the oppressor, lest my wrath go out like fire and burne, that none can quench it, because of the wickednes of your workes.

²⁴ And in controuersie they shall stande to iudge, and they shall iudge it according to my iudgements: and they shall keepe my lawes and my statutes in all mine assemblies, and they shall sanctifie my Sabbaths.

¹ And I sayd, Heare, I pray you, O heads of Iaakob, and yee princes of the house of Israel: should not ye knowe iudgement? ² But they hate the good, and loue the euill: they plucke off their skinnes from them, and their flesh from their bones.

⁴ Therefore the Lawe is dissolued, and iudgement doeth neuer go forth: for the wicked doeth compasse about the righteous: therefore wrong iudgement proceedeth.

¹³ Thou art of pure eyes, and canst not see euill: thou canst not behold wickednesse: wherefore doest thou looke vpon the transgressors, and holdest thy tongue when the wicked deuoureth the man, that is more righteous then he?

¹⁸ Then shall you returne, and discerne betweene the righteous and wicked, betweene him that serueth God, and him that serueth him not.

¹⁰ And now also is the axe put to the roote of the trees: therfore euery tree which bringeth not forth good fruit, is hewen downe, and cast into ye fire.
