² And David said to the whole congregation of Israel, If it seems good to you, and it should be prospered by the Lord our God, let us send to our brethren that are left in all the land of Israel, and let the priests the Levites who are with them in the cities of their possession come, and let them be gathered to us.

²³ If you will do this thing, God shall strengthen you, and you shall be able to endure, and all this people shall go into their own place with peace.

⁴ And these are the works of the sons of Kohath in the tabernacle of witness; it is most holy. ⁵ And Aaron and his sons shall go in, when the camp is about to move, and shall take down the shadowing veil, and they shall cover with it the ark of the Testimony. ⁶ And they shall put a cover on it of blue skin, a garment of all blue, and they shall put the poles through the rings. ⁷ And they shall put on the table set forth for showbread a cloth all of purple, and the dishes, and the censers, and the cups, and the vessels with which one offers drink offerings; and the continual loaves shall be upon it. ⁸ And they shall put upon it a scarlet cloth, and they shall cover it with a blue covering of skin, and they shall put the poles into it. ⁹ And they shall take a blue covering, and cover the lampstand that gives light, and its lamps, and its snuffers, and its funnels, and all the vessels of oil with which they minister. ¹⁰ And they shall put it, and all its vessels, into a blue skin cover; and they shall put it on bearers. ¹¹ And they shall put a blue cloth for a cover on the golden altar, and shall cover it with a blue skin cover, and put in its poles. ¹² And they shall take all the instruments of service, with which they minister in the sanctuary: and shall place them in a cloth of blue, and shall cover them with blue skin covering, and put them upon poles. ¹³ And he shall put the covering on the altar, and they shall cover it with a cloth all of purple. ¹⁴ And they shall put upon it all the vessels with which they minister upon it, and the firepans, and the flesh-hooks, and the cups, and the cover, and all the vessels of the altar; and they shall put on it a blue cover of skins, and shall put in its poles; and they shall take a purple cloth, and cover the laver and its foot, and they shall put it into a blue cover of skin, and put it on bars. ¹⁵ And Aaron and his sons shall finish covering the holy things, and all the holy vessels, when the camp begins to move; and afterwards the sons of Kohath shall go in to take up the furniture; but shall not touch the holy things, lest they die: these shall the sons of Kohath bear in the tabernacle of witness. ¹⁶ Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest is overseer — the oil of the light, and the incense of composition, and the daily grain offering and the anointing oil, are his charge; even the oversight of the whole tabernacle, and all things that are in it in the holy place, in all the works. ¹⁷ And the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying, ¹⁸ You shall not destroy the family of Kohath from the tribe out of the midst of the Levites. ¹⁹ But do this in regard to them, and they shall live and not die, when they approach the holy of holies: Let Aaron and his sons advance, and they shall place them each in his post for bearing. ²⁰ And so they shall by no means go in to look suddenly upon the holy things, and die.

² Give orders to the children of Israel, and they shall give to the Levites cities to dwell in from the lot of their possession, and they shall give to the Levites the suburbs of the cities round about them. ³ And the cities shall be for them to dwell in, and their enclosures shall be for their cattle and all their beasts. ⁴ And the suburbs of the cities which you shall give to the Levites, shall be from the wall of the city and outwards two thousand cubits round about. ⁵ And you shall measure outside the city on the east side two thousand cubits, and on the south side two thousand cubits, and on the west side two thousand cubits, and on the north side two thousand cubits; and your city shall be in the midst of this, and the suburbs of the cities as described. ⁶ And you shall give the cities to the Levites, the six cities of refuge which you shall give for the manslayer to flee there, and in addition to these, forty-two cities. ⁷ You shall give to the Levites in all forty-eight cities, them and their suburbs. ⁸ And as for the cities which you shall give out of the possession of the children of Israel, from those that have much you shall give much, and from those that have less you shall give less: they shall give of their cities to the Levites each one according to his inheritance which they shall inherit. ⁹ And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,

¹ And the Philistines fought with Israel. And the men of Israel fled from before the Philistines, and they fell down wounded in the mountain in Gilboa.

² that the king said to Nathan the prophet, Behold now, I live in a house of cedar, and the ark of the Lord dwells in the midst of a tent. ³ And Nathan said to the king, Go and do all that is in your heart, for the Lord is with you. ⁴ And it came to pass in that night, that the word of the Lord came to Nathan, saying, ⁵ Go, and say to My servant David, Thus says the Lord, You shall not build Me a house to dwell in.

⁷ And they spoke to him, saying, If you will this day be a servant to this people, and serve them, and speak to them good words, then will they be your servants continually.

¹⁵ And King Joram had returned to be healed in Jezreel of the wounds which the Syrians had given him, in his war with Hazael king of Syria. And Jehu said, If your heart is with me, let there not go forth out of the city one fugitive to go and report to Jezreel.

⁵⁴ And these are their residences in their villages, in their coasts, to the sons of Aaron, to their family the Kohathites; for they had the lot. ⁵⁵ And they gave them Hebron in the land of Judah, and its suburbs round about it. ⁵⁶ But the fields of the city, and its villages, they gave to Caleb the son of Jephunneh. ⁵⁷ And to the sons of Aaron they gave the cities of refuge, even Hebron, and Libnah and her suburbs round about, Selna and her suburbs, Eshtemoa and her suburbs, ⁵⁸ Jethar and her suburbs, Debir and her suburbs, ⁵⁹ Ashan and her suburbs, and Beth Shemesh and her suburbs. ⁶⁰ And of the tribe of Benjamin: Geba and her suburbs, Alemeth and her suburbs, and Anathoth and her suburbs. All their cities were thirteen cities according to their families. ⁶¹ And to the sons of Kohath that were left of their families, there were given out of the tribe, namely, out of the half-tribe of Manasseh, by lot, ten cities. ⁶² And to the sons of Gershon according to their families there were given thirteen cities of the tribe of Issachar, of the tribe of Asher, of the tribe of Naphtali, and of the tribe of Manasseh in Bashan. ⁶³ And to the sons of Merari according to their families there were given, by lot, twelve cities of the tribe of Reuben, of the tribe of Gad,and of the tribe of Zebulun. ⁶⁴ So the children of Israel gave to the Levites the cities and their suburbs. ⁶⁵ And they gave by lot out of the tribe of the children of Judah, and out of the tribe of the children of Simeon, and out of the tribe of the children of Benjamin, these cities which they call by name. ⁶⁶ And to the members of the families of the sons of Kohath there were also given the cities of their borders out of the tribe of Ephraim. ⁶⁷ And they gave them the cities of refuge, Shechem and her suburbs in Mount Ephraim, Gezer and her suburbs, ⁶⁸ Jokmeam and her suburbs, Beth Horon and her suburbs, ⁶⁹ Aijalon and her suburbs, and Gath Rimmon and her suburbs. ⁷⁰ And of the half-tribe of Manasseh: Aner and her suburbs, and Bileam and her suburbs, to the sons of Kohath that were left, according to each family. ⁷¹ To the sons of Gershon from the families of the half-tribe of Manasseh they gave Golan of Bashan and her suburbs, and Ashtaroth and her suburbs. ⁷² And out of the tribe of Issachar: Kedesh and her suburbs, Daberath and her suburbs, ⁷³ Ramoth and Anem and their suburbs. ⁷⁴ And of the tribe of Asher: Mashal and her suburbs, Abdon and her suburbs, ⁷⁵ Hukok and her suburbs, and Rehob and her suburbs. ⁷⁶ And of the tribe of Naphtali: Kedesh in Galilee and her suburbs, Hammon and her suburbs, and Kirjathaim and her suburbs. ⁷⁷ To the sons of Merari that were left, they gave out of the tribe of Zebulun: Rimmon and her suburbs, and Tabor and her suburbs. ⁷⁸ And beyond the Jordan, Jericho west of the Jordan, they gave out of the tribe of Reuben: Bezer in the wilderness and her suburbs, Jahzah and her suburbs, ⁷⁹ Kedemoth and her suburbs, and Mephaath and her suburbs. ⁸⁰ Out of the tribe of Gad: Ramoth Gilead and her suburbs, Mahanaim and her suburbs, ⁸¹ Heshbon and her suburbs, and Jazer and her suburbs.

⁷ And all the men of Israel that were in the valley saw that Israel fled, and that Saul and his sons were dead, and they left their cities, and fled; and the Philistines came and dwelt in them.

² Then said David, It is not lawful for any to bear the ark of God, but the Levites; for the Lord has chosen them to bear the ark of the Lord, and to minister to Him forever. ³ And David assembled all Israel at Jerusalem, to bring up the ark of the Lord to the place which he had prepared for it. ⁴ And David gathered together the sons of Aaron the Levites. ⁵ Of the sons of Kohath; there was Uriel the chief, and his brethren, a hundred and twenty. ⁶ Of the sons of Merari, Asaiah the chief, and his brethren, two hundred and twenty. ⁷ Of the sons of Gershom; Joel the chief, and his brethren, a hundred and thirty. ⁸ Of the sons of Elizaphan; Shemaiah the chief, and his brethren, two hundred. ⁹ Of the sons of Hebron; Eliel the chief, and his brethren eighty. ¹⁰ Of the sons of Uzziel; Amminadab the chief, and his brethren a hundred and twelve. ¹¹ And David called Zadok and Abiathar the priests, and the Levites, Uriel, Asaiah, Joel, Shemaiah, Eliel, and Amminadab, ¹² and said to them, You are the heads of the families of the Levites: sanctify yourselves, you and your brethren, and you shall carry up the ark of the God of Israel, to the place which I have prepared for it. ¹³ For because you were not ready at the first, our God made a breach upon us, because we sought Him not according to the ordinance. ¹⁴ So the priests and the Levites sanctified themselves, to bring up the ark of the God of Israel.

⁴ And they told the people who dwelt in Jerusalem, to give the portion of the priests and the Levites, that they might be strong in the ministry of the house of the Lord. ⁵ And as he gave the command, Israel brought abundantly their firstfruits of grain, wine, oil, honey, and every fruit of the field. And the children of Israel and Judah brought tithes of everything abundantly. ⁶ And those who dwelt in the cities of Judah themselves also brought tithes of calves and sheep, and tithes of goats, and consecrated them to the Lord their God, and they brought them and laid them in heaps. ⁷ In the third month the heaps began to be piled, and in the seventh month they were finished. ⁸ And Hezekiah and the princes came and saw the heaps, and blessed the Lord, and His people Israel. ⁹ Then Hezekiah inquired of the priests and the Levites concerning the heaps. ¹⁰ And Azariah the priest, the chief over the house of Zadok, spoke to him, and said, From the time that the firstfruits began to be brought into the house of the Lord, we have eaten and drunk, and left even abundantly; for the Lord has blessed His people, and we have this great amount left. ¹¹ And Hezekiah told them yet farther to prepare chambers for the house of the Lord; and they prepared them, ¹² and they brought there the firstfruits and the tithes faithfully. And Cononiah the Levite was superintendent over them, and Shimei his brother was next. ¹³ And Jehiel, Azaziah, Nahath, Asahel, Jerimoth, Jozabad, Eliel, Ismachiah, Mahath, and Benaiah and his sons, were appointed by Cononiah and Shimei his brother, as Hezekiah the king, and Azariah who was over the house of the Lord commanded. ¹⁴ And Kore, the son of Imnah the Levite, the porter eastward, was over the gifts, to distribute the firstfruits of the Lord, and the most holy things, ¹⁵ by the hand of Eden, Benjamin, Jeshua, Shemaiah, Amariah, and Shecaniah, by the hand of the priests faithfully, to give to their brethren according to the courses, to the great as well as the small; ¹⁶ besides the increase of males from three years old and upward, to everyone entering into the house of the Lord, a portion according to a daily rate, for service in the daily courses of their order. ¹⁷ This is the distribution of the priests according to the houses of their families; and the Levites in their daily courses from twenty years old and upward were in their order, ¹⁸ to assign stations for all the increase of their sons and their daughters, for the whole number, for they faithfully sanctified the holy place. ¹⁹ As for the sons of Aaron that executed the priests' office-even those from their cities, the men in each several city who were named expressly-were appointed to give a portion to every male among the priests, and to everyone reckoned among the Levites. ²⁰ And Hezekiah did so through all Judah, and did that which was good and right before the Lord his God. ²¹ And in every work which he began in service in the house of the Lord, and in the law, and in the ordinances, he sought his God with all his soul, and wrought, and prospered.

²² They that honor not councils put off deliberation, but counsel abides in the hearts of counselors.

⁴ May the Lord your God hear the words of Rabshakeh, which the king of the Assyrians has sent, to reproach the living God, even to reproach with the words which the Lord your God has heard; therefore you shall pray to your Lord for these that are left.

⁸ Therefore, having much boldness in Christ to command you what is fitting, ⁹ rather on account of love I appeal to you--being such a one as Paul, the elder, and now also a prisoner of Jesus Christ--
