³ you are well known to be a letter of Christ, written by us as his ministers, not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God, not in tables of stone, but in fleshy tables of the heart.

¹⁶ Simon Peter answered and said: Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.

⁵ For though there are those which are called gods, whether in heaven or on earth, (as there are many gods, and many lords,) ⁶ yet to us there is one God, the Father, from whom are all things, and we for him; and one Lord, Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him. ⁷ But all have not this knowledge; for some, under the persuasion that an idol is a reality, even yet eat meat, as if it were offered to an idol, and their conscience being weak, is defiled. ⁸ But meat commends us not to God; for, neither if we eat are we better, nor, if we eat not, are we worse. ⁹ But take heed, lest, by any means, this right of yours become a stumbling-block to those who are weak. ¹⁰ For, if any one see you, who have knowledge, reclining at table in an idol's temple, will not the conscience of him who is weak be emboldened, so that he will eat meats offered to idols?

¹⁶ What has a temple of God in common with one of idols? For you are the temple of the living God, as God has said: I will dwell in them, and walk among them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.

⁹ For they themselves declare concerning us what kind of entrance we had to you, and how you turned to God from idols, to serve the living and true God,

¹⁰ For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel, after those days, says the Lord; putting my laws into their understanding, I will also write them upon their hearts; and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people;

¹⁴ how much more will the blood of the Christ, who, through the eternal Spirit, offered himself without spot to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works, in order that you may serve the living God?

¹⁶ This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, says the Lord; putting my laws in their hearts, I will also write them in their understandings:

¹ To the angel of the church in Ephesus, write: These things says he that holds the seven stars in his right hand, that walks in the midst of the seven golden candlesticks;

⁸ And to the angel of the church in Smyrna, write: These things says the First and the Last, who was dead, and is alive:

¹² And to the angel of the church in Pergamos, write: These things says he that has the sharp, two-edged sword;
