John 16

Mace(i) 1 I have told you these things that ye may not be discouraged. 2 they shall expel you out of the synagogues: yea, the time is coming, when it will be thought an agreeable sacrifice to God for any one to take away your lives. 3 and thus will they treat you, because they have not known the father, nor me. 4 but these things have I told you, that when the time shall come, ye may remember what I now tell you. I did not tell you so much at the beginning, because, I was then to be with you. 5 but now I am going to him that sent me; yet none of you ask me now, whither are you going? 6 are your minds so overwhelm'd with sorrow at what I told you? 7 nevertheless, I tell you the truth; it is expedient for you that I go away: for if I do not go away, the advocate will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him to you. 8 and when he is come, he will convince the world of sin, of justice, of judgment: 9 of sin, because they believ'd not on me; 10 of justice, because I shall be with my father, and ye shall see me no more expos'd: 11 of judgment, because the prince of this world is condemn'd. 12 I have yet many things to tell you, but ye cannot bear them now; 13 but when he, the spirit of truth shall come, he will inform you of all those truths: for he will not speak from himself; but the information he shall receive will he communicate: and acquaint you with what is to come. 14 he shall glorify me: for he will commuincate to you, the information, which I shall give him. 15 all that the father has is mine: that is the reason of my saying, "he shall communicate to you the information that I shall give him." 16 Within a little while ye shall not see me: but within a little while ye shall see me again, because I am going to the father. 17 then said some of his disciples among themselves, what is the meaning of his saying, "within a little while ye shall not see me: but within a little while ye shall see me again, because I am going to the father?" 18 for, said they, we cannot comprehend the meaning of that expression, "within a little while?" 19 now Jesus perceiving that they had a mind to ask him, said to them, are you sollicitous about what I said, "within a little while ye shall not see me: but within a little while ye shall see me again?" 20 verily, verily I say unto you, that ye shall weep and lament, but the world shall rejoice: ye shall be sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy. 21 a woman when she is in travail, is afflicted at the approach of her pains: but as soon as she is delivered of the child, the remembrance of her anguish, is lost in her joy, that a man is born into the world. 22 so you are afflicted at present: but I will see you again, and then shall your hearts be affected with joy, and your joy shall no one wrest from you. 23 tho' then you cannot ask any thing of me in person, whatever ye shall ask the father in my name, I assure you he will grant it. 24 hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be compleat. 25 These things have I express'd in a figurative way: the time is coming when my language will be no longer enigmatical, but I shall give you a plain account relating to my father. 26 though then ye shall ask in my name: I need not promise, that I will pray the father for you; 27 for the father himself loveth you, because ye have loved me, and have believed that I had my mission from God. 28 I was sent by the father, and am come into the world: but now I leave the world, and am going to my father. 29 His disciples said to him, what you say now is plain, and not enigmatical. 30 now we are convinc'd that you know all our difficulties, and have no occasion that any man should propose them to you: by this we believe that you were sent from God. 31 Jesus answered them, you now believe. 32 but, alas, the time is coming, yea, is already come, when ye shall be dispers'd every one to his own retreat, and shall leave me alone: and yet I am not alone, because the father is with me. 33 these things I have appriz'd you of, that ye might repose your confidence in me. the world shall give you trouble: but take courage, I have overcome the world.
