Joshua 9 And it came to pass, when all the kings which were on this side Jordan , in the hills , and in the valleys , and in all the coasts of the great sea over against Lebanon , the Hittite , and the Amorite , the Canaanite , the Perizzite , the Hivite , and the Jebusite , heard thereof;

2 H6908 That they gathered [H8691] H3162 themselves together H3898 , to fight [H8736] H3091 with Joshua H3478 and with Israel H259 , with one H6310 accord.

3 H3427 And when the inhabitants [H8802] H1391 of Gibeon H8085 heard [H8804] H3091 what Joshua H6213 had done [H8804] H3405 unto Jericho H5857 and to Ai,

4 H6213 They did work [H8799] H6195 wilily H3212 , and went [H8799] H6737 and made as if they had been ambassadors [H8691] H3947 , and took [H8799] H1087 old H8242 sacks H2543 upon their asses H3196 , and wine H4997 bottles H1087 , old H1234 , and rent [H8794] H6887 , and bound up [H8794] ;

5 H1087 And old H5275 shoes H2921 and clouted [H8794] H7272 upon their feet H1087 , and old H8008 garments H3899 upon them; and all the bread H6718 of their provision H3001 was dry [H8804] H5350 and mouldy.

6 H3212 And they went [H8799] H3091 to Joshua H4264 unto the camp H1537 at Gilgal H559 , and said [H8799] H376 unto him, and to the men H3478 of Israel H935 , We be come [H8804] H7350 from a far H776 country H3772 : now therefore make [H8798] H1285 ye a league with us.

7 H376 And the men H3478 of Israel H559 said [H8799] H2340 unto the Hivites H194 , Peradventure H3427 ye dwell [H8802] H7130 among H3772 us; and how shall we make [H8799] H1285 a league with you?

8 H559 And they said [H8799] H3091 unto Joshua H5650 , We are thy servants H3091 . And Joshua H559 said [H8799] H370 unto them, Who are ye? and from whence H935 come [H8799] ye?

9 H559 And they said [H8799] H3966 unto him, From a very H7350 far H776 country H5650 thy servants H935 are come [H8804] H8034 because of the name H3068 of the LORD H430 thy God H8085 : for we have heard [H8804] H8089 the fame H6213 of him, and all that he did [H8804] H4714 in Egypt,

10 H6213 And all that he did [H8804] H8147 to the two H4428 kings H567 of the Amorites H5676 , that were beyond H3383 Jordan H5511 , to Sihon H4428 king H2809 of Heshbon H5747 , and to Og H4428 king H1316 of Bashan H6252 , which was at Ashtaroth.

11 H2205 Wherefore our elders H3427 and all the inhabitants [H8802] H776 of our country H559 spake [H8799] H559 to us, saying [H8800] H3947 , Take [H8798] H6720 victuals H3027 with you H1870 for the journey H3212 , and go [H8798] H7125 to meet [H8800] H559 them, and say [H8804] H5650 unto them, We are your servants H3772 : therefore now make [H8798] H1285 ye a league with us.

12 H3899 This our bread H2525 we took hot H6679 for our provision [H8694] H1004 out of our houses H3117 on the day H3318 we came forth [H8800] H3212 to go [H8800] H3001 unto you; but now, behold, it is dry [H8804] H5350 , and it is mouldy:

13 H4997 And these bottles H3196 of wine H4390 , which we filled [H8765] H2319 , were new H1234 ; and, behold, they be rent [H8694] H8008 : and these our garments H5275 and our shoes H1086 are become old [H8804] H3966 by reason of the very H7230 long H1870 journey.

14 H582 And the men H3947 took [H8799] H6718 of their victuals H7592 , and asked [H8804] H6310 not counsel at the mouth H3068 of the LORD.

15 H3091 And Joshua H6213 made [H8799] H7965 peace H3772 with them, and made [H8799] H1285 a league H2421 with them, to let them live [H8763] H5387 : and the princes H5712 of the congregation H7650 sware [H8735] unto them.

16 H7097 And it came to pass at the end H7969 of three H3117 days H310 after H3772 they had made [H8804] H1285 a league H8085 with them, that they heard [H8799] H7138 that they were their neighbours H3427 , and that they dwelt [H8802] H7130 among them.

17 H1121 And the children H3478 of Israel H5265 journeyed [H8799] H935 , and came [H8799] H5892 unto their cities H7992 on the third H3117 day H5892 . Now their cities H1391 were Gibeon H3716 , and Chephirah H881 , and Beeroth H7157 , and Kirjathjearim.

18 H1121 And the children H3478 of Israel H5221 smote [H8689] H5387 them not, because the princes H5712 of the congregation H7650 had sworn [H8738] H3068 unto them by the LORD H430 God H3478 of Israel H5712 . And all the congregation H3885 murmured [H8735] H5387 against the princes.

19 H5387 But all the princes H559 said [H8799] H5712 unto all the congregation H7650 , We have sworn [H8738] H3068 unto them by the LORD H430 God H3478 of Israel H3201 : now therefore we may [H8799] H5060 not touch [H8800] them.

20 H6213 This we will do [H8799] H2421 to them; we will even let them live [H8687] H7110 , lest wrath H7621 be upon us, because of the oath H7650 which we sware [H8738] unto them.

21 H5387 And the princes H559 said [H8799] H2421 unto them, Let them live [H8799] H2404 ; but let them be hewers [H8802] H6086 of wood H7579 and drawers [H8802] H4325 of water H5712 unto all the congregation H5387 ; as the princes H1696 had promised [H8765] them.

22 H3091 And Joshua H7121 called [H8799] H1696 for them, and he spake [H8762] H559 unto them, saying [H8800] H7411 , Wherefore have ye beguiled [H8765] H559 us, saying [H8800] H3966 , We are very H7350 far H3427 from you; when ye dwell [H8802] H7130 among us?

23 H779 Now therefore ye are cursed [H8803] H3772 , and there shall none of you be freed [H8735] H5650 from being bondmen H2404 , and hewers [H8802] H6086 of wood H7579 and drawers [H8802] H4325 of water H1004 for the house H430 of my God.

24 H6030 And they answered [H8799] H3091 Joshua H559 , and said [H8799] H5046 , Because it was certainly [H8715] H5046 told [H8717] H5650 thy servants H3068 , how that the LORD H430 thy God H6680 commanded [H8765] H5650 his servant H4872 Moses H5414 to give [H8800] H776 you all the land H8045 , and to destroy [H8687] H3427 all the inhabitants [H8802] H776 of the land H6440 from before H3966 you, therefore we were sore H3372 afraid [H8799] H5315 of our lives H6440 because H6213 of you, and have done [H8799] H1697 this thing.

25 H2009 And now, behold, we H3027 are in thine hand H5869 : as it seemeth H2896 good H3477 and right H6213 unto thee to do [H8800] H6213 unto us, do [H8798] .

26 H6213 And so did [H8799] H5337 he unto them, and delivered [H8686] H3027 them out of the hand H1121 of the children H3478 of Israel H2026 , that they slew [H8804] them not.

27 H3091 And Joshua H5414 made [H8799] H3117 them that day H2404 hewers [H8802] H6086 of wood H7579 and drawers [H8802] H4325 of water H5712 for the congregation H4196 , and for the altar H3068 of the LORD H3117 , even unto this day H4725 , in the place H977 which he should choose [H8799] .
