Joshua 8:1-29 ויאמר said יהוה And the LORD אל unto יהושׁע Joshua, אל not, תירא Fear ואל neither תחת be thou dismayed: קח take עמך with את כל all עם the people המלחמה of war וקום thee, and arise, עלה go up העי to Ai: ראה see, נתתי I have given בידך into thy hand את מלך the king העי of Ai, ואת עמו and his people, ואת עירו and his city, ואת ארצו׃ and his land:

1 H559 ויאמר said H3068 יהוה And the LORD H413 אל unto H3091 יהושׁע Joshua, H408 אל not, H3372 תירא Fear H408 ואל neither H2865 תחת be thou dismayed: H3947 קח take H5973 עמך with H853 את H3605 כל all H5971 עם the people H4421 המלחמה of war H6965 וקום thee, and arise, H5927 עלה go up H5857 העי to Ai: H7200 ראה see, H5414 נתתי I have given H3027 בידך into thy hand H853 את H4428 מלך the king H5857 העי of Ai, H853 ואת H5971 עמו and his people, H853 ואת H5892 עירו and his city, H853 ואת H776 ארצו׃ and his land:

2 H6213 ועשׂית And thou shalt do H5857 לעי to Ai H4428 ולמלכה and her king H834 כאשׁר as H6213 עשׂית thou didst H3405 ליריחו unto Jericho H4428 ולמלכה and her king: H7535 רק only H7998 שׁללה the spoil H929 ובהמתה thereof, and the cattle H962 תבזו thereof, shall ye take for a prey H7760 לכם שׂים unto yourselves: lay H693 לך ארב thee an ambush H5892 לעיר for the city H310 מאחריה׃ behind

3 H6965 ויקם arose, H3091 יהושׁע So Joshua H3605 וכל and all H5971 עם the people H4421 המלחמה of war, H5927 לעלות to go up H5857 העי against Ai: H977 ויבחר chose out H3091 יהושׁע and Joshua H7970 שׁלשׁים thirty H505 אלף thousand H376 אישׁ men H1368 גבורי mighty H2428 החיל of valor, H7971 וישׁלחם and sent them away H3915 לילה׃ by night.

4 H6680 ויצו And he commanded H853 אתם H559 לאמר them, saying, H7200 ראו Behold, H859 אתם ye H693 ארבים shall lie in wait H5892 לעיר against the city, H310 מאחרי behind H5892 העיר the city: H408 אל not H7368 תרחיקו go H4480 מן behind H5892 העיר the city, H3966 מאד very H1961 והייתם but be H3605 כלכם ye all H3559 נכנים׃ ready:

5 H589 ואני And I, H3605 וכל and all H5971 העם the people H834 אשׁר that H854 אתי with H7126 נקרב me, will approach H413 אל unto H5892 העיר the city: H1961 והיה and it shall come to pass, H3588 כי when H3318 יצאו they come out H7125 לקראתנו against H834 כאשׁר us, as H7223 בראשׁנה at the first, H5127 ונסנו that we will flee H6440 לפניהם׃ before

6 H3318 ויצאו (For they will come out H310 אחרינו after H5704 עד us) till H5423 התיקנו we have drawn H853 אותם H4480 מן them from H5892 העיר the city; H3588 כי for H559 יאמרו they will say, H5127 נסים They flee H6440 לפנינו before H834 כאשׁר us, as H7223 בראשׁנה at the first: H5127 ונסנו therefore we will flee H6440 לפניהם׃ before

7 H859 ואתם Then ye H6965 תקמו shall rise up H693 מהאורב from the ambush, H3423 והורשׁתם and seize upon H853 את H5892 העיר the city: H5414 ונתנה will deliver H3068 יהוה for the LORD H430 אלהיכם your God H3027 בידכם׃ it into your hand.

8 H1961 והיה And it shall be, H8610 כתפשׂכם when ye have taken H853 את H5892 העיר the city, H3341 תציתו ye shall set H853 את H5892 העיר the city H784 באשׁ on fire: H1697 כדבר according to the commandment H3068 יהוה of the LORD H6213 תעשׂו shall ye do. H7200 ראו See, H6680 צויתי I have commanded H853 אתכם׃

9 H7971 וישׁלחם therefore sent them forth: H3091 יהושׁע Joshua H1980 וילכו and they went H413 אל to H3993 המארב lie in ambush, H3427 וישׁבו and abode H996 בין between H1008 בית אל Bethel H996 ובין H5857 העי and Ai, H3220 מים on the west side H5857 לעי of Ai: H3885 וילן lodged H3091 יהושׁע but Joshua H3915 בלילה night H1931 ההוא that H8432 בתוך among H5971 העם׃ the people.

10 H7925 וישׁכם rose up early H3091 יהושׁע And Joshua H1242 בבקר in the morning, H6485 ויפקד and numbered H853 את H5971 העם the people, H5927 ויעל and went up, H1931 הוא he H2205 וזקני and the elders H3478 ישׂראל of Israel, H6440 לפני before H5971 העם the people H5857 העי׃ to Ai.

11 H3605 וכל And all H5971 העם the people, H4421 המלחמה of war H834 אשׁר that H854 אתו with H5927 עלו him, went up, H5066 ויגשׁו and drew nigh, H935 ויבאו and came H5048 נגד before H5892 העיר the city, H2583 ויחנו and pitched H6828 מצפון on the north side H5857 לעי of Ai: H1516 והגי now a valley H996 בינו between H996 ובין H5857 העי׃ them and Ai.

12 H3947 ויקח And he took H2568 כחמשׁת about five H505 אלפים thousand H376 אישׁ men, H7760 וישׂם and set H853 אותם H693 ארב them to lie in ambush H996 בין between H1008 בית אל Bethel H996 ובין H5857 העי and Ai, H3220 מים on the west side H5892 לעיר׃ of the city.

13 H7760 וישׂימו And when they had set H5971 העם the people, H853 את H3605 כל all H4264 המחנה the host H834 אשׁר that H6828 מצפון on the north H5892 לעיר of the city, H853 ואת H6119 עקבו and their liers in wait H3220 מים on the west H5892 לעיר of the city, H1980 וילך went H3091 יהושׁע Joshua H3915 בלילה night H1931 ההוא that H8432 בתוך into the midst H6010 העמק׃ of the valley.

14 H1961 ויהי And it came to pass, H7200 כראות saw H4428 מלך when the king H5857 העי of Ai H4116 וימהרו that they hasted H7925 וישׁכימו and rose up early, H3318 ויצאו went out H582 אנשׁי H5892 העיר of the city H7125 לקראת against H3478 ישׂראל Israel H4421 למלחמה to battle, H1931 הוא he H3605 וכל and all H5971 עמו his people, H4150 למועד at a time appointed, H6440 לפני before H6160 הערבה the plain; H1931 והוא but he H3808 לא not H3045 ידע knew H3588 כי that H693 ארב liers in ambush H310 לו מאחרי against him behind H5892 העיר׃ the city.

15 H5060 וינגעו made as if they were beaten H3091 יהושׁע And Joshua H3605 וכל and all H3478 ישׂראל Israel H6440 לפניהם before H5127 וינסו them, and fled H1870 דרך by the way H4057 המדבר׃ of the wilderness.

16 H2199 ויזעקו were called together H3605 כל And all H5971 העם the people H834 אשׁר that H5892 בעיר the city. H7291 לרדף to pursue H310 אחריהם after H7291 וירדפו them: and they pursued H310 אחרי after H3091 יהושׁע Joshua, H5423 וינתקו and were drawn away H4480 מן from H5892 העיר׃

17 H3808 ולא And there was not H7604 נשׁאר left H376 אישׁ a man H5857 בעי in Ai H1008 ובית אל or Bethel, H834 אשׁר that H3808 לא went not out H3318 יצאו went not out H310 אחרי after H3478 ישׂראל Israel: H5800 ויעזבו and they left H853 את H5892 העיר the city H6605 פתוחה open, H7291 וירדפו and pursued H310 אחרי after H3478 ישׂראל׃ Israel.

18 H559 ויאמר said H3068 יהוה And the LORD H413 אל unto H3091 יהושׁע Joshua, H5186 נטה Stretch out H3591 בכידון the spear H834 אשׁר that H3027 בידך in thy hand H413 אל toward H5857 העי Ai; H3588 כי for H3027 בידך it into thine hand. H5414 אתננה I will give H5186 ויט stretched out H3091 יהושׁע And Joshua H3591 בכידון the spear H834 אשׁר that H3027 בידו in his hand H413 אל toward H5892 העיר׃ the city.

19 H693 והאורב And the ambush H6965 קם arose H4120 מהרה quickly H4725 ממקומו out of their place, H7323 וירוצו and they ran H5186 כנטות as soon as he had stretched out H3027 ידו his hand: H935 ויבאו and they entered H5892 העיר into the city, H3920 וילכדוה and took H4116 וימהרו it, and hasted H3341 ויציתו and set H853 את H5892 העיר the city H784 באשׁ׃ on fire.

20 H6437 ויפנו looked H376 אנשׁי And when the men H5857 העי of Ai H310 אחריהם behind H7200 ויראו them, they saw, H2009 והנה and, behold, H5927 עלה ascended up H6227 עשׁן the smoke H5892 העיר of the city H8064 השׁמימה to heaven, H3808 ולא no H1961 היה and they had H3027 בהם ידים power H5127 לנוס to flee H2008 הנה this way H2008 והנה or that way: H5971 והעם and the people H5127 הנס that fled H4057 המדבר to the wilderness H2015 נהפך turned back H413 אל upon H7291 הרודף׃ the pursuers.

21 H3091 ויהושׁע And when Joshua H3605 וכל and all H3478 ישׂראל Israel H7200 ראו saw H3588 כי that H3920 לכד had taken H693 הארב the ambush H853 את H5892 העיר the city, H3588 וכי and that H5927 עלה ascended, H6227 עשׁן the smoke H5892 העיר of the city H7725 וישׁבו then they turned again, H5221 ויכו and slew H853 את H582 אנשׁי H5857 העי׃ of Ai.

22 H428 ואלה And the other H3318 יצאו issued out H4480 מן of H5892 העיר the city H7125 לקראתם against H1961 ויהיו them; so they were H3478 לישׂראל of Israel, H8432 בתוך in the midst H428 אלה some H2088 מזה on this side, H428 ואלה and some H2088 מזה on that side: H5221 ויכו and they smote H853 אותם H5704 עד them, so H1115 בלתי that they let none H7604 השׁאיר of them remain H8300 לו שׂריד H6412 ופליט׃ or escape.

23 H853 ואת H4428 מלך And the king H5857 העי of Ai H8610 תפשׂו they took H2416 חי alive, H7126 ויקרבו and brought H853 אתו H413 אל him to H3091 יהושׁע׃ Joshua.

24 H1961 ויהי And it came to pass, H3615 ככלות had made an end H3478 ישׂראל when Israel H2026 להרג of slaying H853 את H3605 כל all H3427 ישׁבי the inhabitants H5857 העי of Ai H7704 בשׂדה in the field, H4057 במדבר in the wilderness H834 אשׁר wherein H7291 רדפום they chased H5307 בו ויפלו fallen H3605 כלם them, and when they were all H6310 לפי on the edge H2719 חרב of the sword, H5704 עד until H8552 תמם they were consumed, H7725 וישׁבו returned H3605 כל that all H3478 ישׂראל the Israelites H5857 העי unto Ai, H5221 ויכו and smote H853 אתה H6310 לפי it with the edge H2719 חרב׃ of the sword.

25 H1961 ויהי And it was, H3605 כל all H5307 הנפלים that fell H3117 ביום day, H1931 ההוא that H376 מאישׁ both of men H5704 ועד H802 אשׁה and women, H8147 שׁנים twelve H6240 עשׂר twelve H505 אלף thousand, H3605 כל all H376 אנשׁי the men H5857 העי׃ of Ai.

26 H3091 ויהושׁע For Joshua H3808 לא not H7725 השׁיב drew H3027 ידו his hand H834 אשׁר back, wherewith H5186 נטה he stretched out H3591 בכידון the spear, H5704 עד until H834 אשׁר until H2763 החרים he had utterly destroyed H853 את H3605 כל all H3427 ישׁבי the inhabitants H5857 העי׃ of Ai.

27 H7535 רק Only H929 הבהמה the cattle H7998 ושׁלל and the spoil H5892 העיר city H1931 ההיא of that H962 בזזו took for a prey H1992 להם H3478 ישׂראל Israel H1697 כדבר unto themselves, according unto the word H3068 יהוה of the LORD H834 אשׁר which H6680 צוה he commanded H853 את H3091 יהושׁע׃ Joshua.

28 H8313 וישׂרף burnt H3091 יהושׁע And Joshua H853 את H5857 העי Ai, H7760 וישׂימה and made H8510 תל it a heap H5769 עולם forever, H8077 שׁממה a desolation H5704 עד unto H3117 היום day. H2088 הזה׃ this

29 H853 ואת H4428 מלך And the king H5857 העי of Ai H8518 תלה he hanged H5921 על on H6086 העץ a tree H5704 עד until H6256 עת eventide: H6153 הערב eventide: H935 וכבוא was down, H8121 השׁמשׁ and as soon as the sun H6680 צוה commanded H3091 יהושׁע Joshua H3381 וירידו H853 את H5038 נבלתו H4480 מן from H6086 העץ the tree, H7993 וישׁליכו and cast H853 אותה H413 אל it at H6607 פתח the entering H8179 שׁער of the gate H5892 העיר of the city, H6965 ויקימו and raise H5921 עליו thereon H1530 גל heap H68 אבנים of stones, H1419 גדול a great H5704 עד unto H3117 היום day. H2088 הזה׃ this
