Isaiah 49

ECB(i) 1
THE SERVANT OF YAH VEH
Hearken, O islands, to me; and hearken, you nations, from afar; Yah Veh called me from the belly; from the inwards of my mother he mentioned my name: 2 and he set my mouth as a sharp sword; in the shadow of his hand he hid me, and set me as a polished arrow; in his quiver he hid me. 3 And he says to me, You are my servant, O Yisra El, in whom I am adorned. 4 Then I say, I labored in vain; I finished off my force for a waste, and in vain: surely my judgment is with Yah Veh, and my deeds with my Elohim. 5 And now, says Yah Veh who formed me from the belly to be his servant, to return Yaaqov to him, Though Yisra El is not gathered, yet I am honored in the eyes of Yah Veh, and my Elohim is my strength. 6 And he says, It is trifling that you become my servant to raise up the scions of Yaaqov; and to restore the guarded of Yisra El: I also give you for a light to the goyim, to become my salvation to the end of the earth. 7 Thus says Yah Veh, the Redeemer of Yisra El, his Holy One, to the despised in soul to the abhorrent of the goyim to a servant of sovereigns, Sovereigns see and rise; and governors prostrate; because of Yah Veh who is trustworthy - the Holy One of Yisra El, and he chooses you. 8
THE RESTORATION OF YISRA EL
Thus says Yah Veh, In a time of pleasure I answered you; and in a day of salvation I helped you: and I guard you and give you for a covenant of the people to raise the earth; to have them inherit the desolated inheritances; 9 to say to the bound, Come! To them in darkness, Expose! They graze in the ways with their pastures in all the barrens: 10 they neither famish nor thirst; neither glare nor sun smites them: for he who mercies them, drives them; and by the springs of water he guides them. 11 And I set all my mountains, a way, and my highways, exalted. 12 Behold, these come from afar; and behold, these from the north and from the seaward; and these from the land of Sinim. 13 Shout, O heavens! And twirl, O earth! And break forth into shouting, O mountains! For Yah Veh sighs over his people and mercies his humbled. 14 And Siyon says, Yah Veh forsook me! and, Adonay forgot me! 15 Forgets a woman her suckling? Mercies she not the son of her belly? Yes, they forget; but I - I forget you not. 16 Behold, I engraved you on the palms of my hands; your walls are continually in front of me. 17 Your sons hasten; your demolishers and they who parched you go from you. 18 Lift up your eyes all round, and see: all these gather and come to you. I live - an oracle of Yah Veh surely you, as an ornament, enrobe them all, and bind them as a bride. 19 For your parched areas and your desolated and the land of your destruction are even now too restricted by reason of the settlers; and they who swallow you are far removed. 20 Again the sons of your bereavements say in your ears, The place is too tribulated for me: approach me, and I settle down. 21 Then you say in your heart, Who birthed me these, seeing I aborted and am sterile - an exile, turned aside? And who nourished these? Behold, I alone survive; These - whence are they? 22 Thus says Adonay Yah Veh, Behold, I lift my hand to the goyim and lift my ensign to the people: and they bring your sons in the bosom and bear your daughters on their shoulders: 23 and sovereigns become your nurturers and their governesses your sucklers: they prostrate to you with their nostrils toward the earth and lick up the dust of your feet; and you know I - Yah Veh: for they who await me shame not. 24 Take they the prey from the mighty? Or rescue the captive of the just? 25 For thus says Yah Veh, Even the captives of the mighty are taken and the prey of the tyrant is rescued: for I contend with him who contends with you and I save your sons: 26 and they who oppress you, I feed with their own flesh; and intoxicate with their own blood as with squeezed juice: that all flesh know I - Yah Veh your Saviour and your Redeemer, the Almighty One of Yaaqov.
