DAVID SPARES THE LIFE OF SHAUL
And so be it, Shaul returns from after the Peleshethiy, and they tell him, saying, Behold, David is in the wilderness of En Gedi. 2 And Shaul takes three thousand chosen men of all Yisra El; and goes to seek David and his men on the face of the rocks of the ibexes: 3 and he comes to the flock walls by the way and a cave is there; and Shaul goes in to cover his feet: and David and his men settle in the flanks of the cave. 4 And the men of David say to him, Behold the day of which Yah Veh says to you, Behold, I give your enemy into your hand, to work to him as it well-pleases your eyes. And David rises and cuts off the border of the mantle undercover of Shaul. 5 And so be it, afterward, the heart of David smites him, because he cut off the border of Shaul: 6 and he says to his men, Far be it, that I work this word to my adoni, the anointed of Yah Veh - to send my hand against him seeing he is the anointed of Yah Veh. 7 And David cleaves his men with these words and allows them not to rise against Shaul; and Shaul rises from the cave and goes on his way: 8 and David rises afterward and goes from the cave and calls out after Shaul, saying, My adoni the sovereign! Shaul looks behind him and David bows with his nostrils to the earth and prostrates: 9 and David says to Shaul, Why hear you human words, saying, Behold, David seeks your evil? 10 Behold, this day your eyes see how that today Yah Veh gave you into my hand in the cave: and said to slaughter you; but I spared you: and I said, I send not my hand against my adoni; for he is the anointed of Yah Veh: 11 and see, my father, - see the borders of your mantle in my hand: for I cut off the border of your mantle and slaughtered you not: know and see that there is neither evil nor rebellion in my hand; nor sin I against you; yet you lurk my soul to take it: 12 Yah Veh judge between me and between you and Yah Veh avenge me of you: but my hand becomes not upon you. 13 As the proverb of the ancients says, Wickedness goes from the wicked: but my hand becomes not on you. 14 After whom goes the sovereign of Yisra El? After whom pursues he? After a dead dog? After one flea? 15 Yah Veh becomes advocate and judge between me and between you and see and plead my plea and judge me from your hand. 16 And so be it, David finishes wording these words to Shaul, and Shaul says, Is this your voice, my son David? And Shaul lifts his voice and weeps; 17 and says to David, You are more just than I: for you deal me good, whereas I deal you evil: 18 and you tell this day how you work good with me: how Yah Veh shut me into your hand, and you slaughtered me not: 19 and that a man finding his enemy, sends him away in a good way: may Yah Veh shalam you for what you work to me this day. 20 And now, behold, I know well, that in reigning, you reign and the sovereigndom of Yisra El rises in your hand. 21 Oath now to me by Yah Veh, that you not cut off my seed after me and that you not desolate my name from the house of my father. 22 And David oaths to Shaul. And Shaul goes to his house; and David and his men ascend to the hold.
