Matthew 19

ALT(i) 1 And it happened, when Jesus finished these words, He departed from Galilee and came into the borders of Judea, beyond the Jordan. 2 And large crowds followed Him, and He healed them there. 3 And the Pharisees came to Him, testing Him and saying to Him, "Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for every cause?" 4 But answering, He said, "Did youp not read that the One having made [them] from [the] beginning made them male and female; [Gen 1:27] 5 and said, "For this reason, a man will leave behind {his} father and mother and will be joined to [or, be united with] his wife. And they will be— the two— into one flesh [or, the two will become one flesh]? [Gen 2:24] 6 "With the result that they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore, what God joined together, stop letting a person separate!" 7 They say to Him, "Why then did Moses command to 'give a scroll of divorce and to divorce her?'" [Deut 24:1,3] 8 He says to them, "Because of yourp stubbornness Moses permitted youp to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it has not been this way. 9 "But I say to youp, whoever divorces his wife [but] not for sexual sin and marries another commits adultery, and the one having married the one having been divorced commits adultery." 10 His disciples say to Him, "If the relationship of the man with the woman is like this, it is better not to marry." 11 But He said to them, "All do not accept this word, but [only those] to whom it has been given. 12 "For there are eunuchs [i.e., men incapable of having sex] who from [their] mother's womb were so born, and there are eunuchs who were made eunuchs by the people, and there are eunuchs who made themselves eunuchs because of the kingdom of the heavens: the one able to be accepting [it], let him be accepting [it]." 13 Then young children were brought to Him, so that He should lay His hands on them and pray, but the disciples rebuked them. 14 But Jesus said, "Allow the young children, and stop forbidding them to come to Me, for of such is the kingdom of the heavens." 15 And having laid His hands on them, He departed from there. 16 And look! Someone having approached said to Him, "Good teacher, what good [thing] shall I do that I shall be having eternal life?" 17 But He said to him, "Why do you call Me good? No one [is] good except One— God. But if you desire to enter into that life, keep the commandments." 18 He says to Him, "Which [ones]?" So Jesus said, "'You will not murder; You will not commit adultery; You will not steal; You will not give false testimony; 19 'Honor your father and mother;' and, 'You will love your neighbor as yourself.'" [Exod 20:12-16; Deut 5:16-20; Lev 19:18] 20 The young man says to Him, "All these I myself obeyed from my youth; what am I still lacking?" 21 Jesus said to him, "If you desire to be perfect, be going away; sell your possessions and give to [the] poor [ones], and you will have treasure in heaven. And come! Be following Me!" 22 But the young man having heard the word, went away sorrowing [or, distressed], for he was having many possessions. 23 Then Jesus said to His disciples, "Positively, I say to youp, with difficulty will a rich [person] enter into the kingdom of the heavens. 24 "Now again I say to youp, it is easier [for] a camel to pass through an eye of a needle, than [for] a rich [person] to enter into the kingdom of God." 25 So His disciples having heard were extremely amazed, saying, "In that case, who is able to be saved?" 26 But Jesus having looked attentively [at them], said to them, "With people this is impossible, but with God all [things] {are} possible!" 27 Then answering, Peter said to Him, "Listen! We left all and followed You! What then will we have? 28 So Jesus said to them, "Positively, I say to youp, that youp, the ones having followed Me, in the Regeneration, when the Son of Humanity sits on [the] throne of His glory, youp also will sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. 29 "And every [one] who left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or farms for My name's sake will receive a hundred times as much and will inherit eternal life. 30 "But many first [ones] will be last, and last [ones] first.
