Isaiah 36 Now it came to pass in the fourteenth year of king Hezekiah, that Sennacherib king of Assyria came up against all the defended cities of Judah, and took them.

1 H1961 Now it came H702 to pass in the fourteenth H6240 H8141 year H4428 of king H2396 Hezekiah, H5576 that Sennacherib H4428 king H804 of Assyria H5927 came H5921 up against H3605 all H1219 the defended H5892 cities H3063 of Judah, H8610 and took them.

2 H4428 And the king H804 of Assyria H7971 sent H7262 Rabshakeh H3923 from Lachish H3389 to Jerusalem H4428 to king H2396 Hezekiah H3515 with a great H2426 army. H5975 And he stood H8585 by the conduit H5945 of the upper H1295 pool H4546 in the highway H3526 of the fuller’s H7704 field.

3 H3318 Then came H3318 forth H471 to him Eliakim, H2518 Hilkiah’s H1121 son, H834 which H5921 was over H1004 the house, H7644 and Shebna H5608 the scribe, H3098 and Joah, H623 Asaph’s H1121 son, H2142 the recorder.

4 H7262 And Rabshakeh H559 said H559 to them, Say H4994 you now H2396 to Hezekiah, H3541 Thus H559 said H1419 the great H4428 king, H4428 the king H804 of Assyria, H4100 What H986 confidence H2088 is this H834 wherein H982 you trust?

5 H559 I say, H8193 say you, (but they are but vain H1697 words) H6098 I have counsel H1369 and strength H4421 for war: H6258 now H5921 on H4310 whom H982 do you trust, H4775 that you rebel against me?

6 H2009 See, H982 you trust H4938 in the staff H2088 of this H7533 broken H7070 reed, H5921 on H4714 Egypt; H834 where on H5921 H376 if a man H5564 lean, H935 it will go H3709 into his hand, H5344 and pierce H3651 it: so H6547 is Pharaoh H4428 king H4714 of Egypt H3605 to all H982 that trust in him.

7 H559 But if you say H982 to me, We trust H3068 in the LORD H430 our God: H834 is it not he, whose H853 H1116 high H853 places and whose H4196 altars H2396 Hezekiah H5493 has taken H5493 away, H559 and said H3063 to Judah H3389 and to Jerusalem, H7812 You shall worship H6440 before H2088 this H4196 altar?

8 H6258 Now H6148 therefore give pledges, H4994 I pray H113 you, to my master H4428 the king H804 of Assyria, H5414 and I will give H505 you two thousand H5483 horses, H518 if H3201 you be able H5414 on your part to set H7392 riders on them.

9 H349 How H7725 then will you turn H6440 away the face H259 of one H6346 captain H6996 of the least H113 of my master’s H5650 servants, H982 and put your trust H5921 on H4714 Egypt H7393 for chariots H6571 and for horsemen?

10 H6258 And am I now H5927 come H1107 up without H3068 the LORD H5921 against H2063 this H776 land H7843 to destroy H3068 it? the LORD H559 said H5927 to me, Go H413 up against H2063 this H776 land, H7843 and destroy it.

11 H559 Then said H471 Eliakim H7644 and Shebna H3098 and Joah H7262 to Rabshakeh, H1696 Speak, H4994 I pray H5650 you, to your servants H762 in the Syrian H8085 language; for we understand H1696 it: and speak H3064 not to us in the Jews’ H241 language, in the ears H5971 of the people H5921 that are on H2346 the wall.

12 H7262 But Rabshakeh H559 said, H113 Has my master H7971 sent H113 me to your master H1696 and to you to speak H428 these H1697 words? H582 has he not sent me to the men H3427 that sit H2346 on the wall, H398 that they may eat H2716 their own dung, H8354 and drink H7890 their own urine with you?

13 H7262 Then Rabshakeh H5975 stood, H7121 and cried H1419 with a loud H6963 voice H3064 in the Jews’ H559 language, and said, H8085 Hear H1697 you the words H1419 of the great H4428 king, H4428 the king H804 of Assyria.

14 H3541 Thus H559 said H4428 the king, H2396 Let not Hezekiah H5377 deceive H3201 you: for he shall not be able H5337 to deliver you.

15 H408 Neither H2396 let Hezekiah H982 make you trust H3068 in the LORD, H559 saying, H3068 The LORD H5337 will surely deliver H2063 us: this H5892 city H5414 shall not be delivered H3027 into the hand H4428 of the king H804 of Assyria.

16 H8085 Listen H2396 not to Hezekiah: H3541 for thus H559 said H4428 the king H804 of Assyria, H6213 Make H1293 an agreement with me by a present, H3318 and come H398 out to me: and eat H376 you every H376 one H1612 of his vine, H376 and every H376 one H8384 of his fig H8354 tree, and drink H376 you every H376 one H4325 the waters H953 of his own cistern;

17 H5704 Until H935 I come H3947 and take H776 you away to a land H776 like your own land, H776 a land H1715 of corn H8492 and wine, H776 a land H3899 of bread H3754 and vineyards.

18 H6435 Beware lest H2396 Hezekiah H5496 persuade H559 you, saying, H3068 the LORD H5337 will deliver H376 us. Has any H430 of the gods H1471 of the nations H5337 delivered H776 his land H3027 out of the hand H4428 of the king H804 of Assyria?

19 H346 Where H430 are the gods H2574 of Hamath H774 and Arphad? H346 where H430 are the gods H5617 of Sepharvaim? H5337 and have they delivered H8111 Samaria H3027 out of my hand?

20 H4310 Who H3605 are they among all H430 the gods H428 of these H776 lands, H5337 that have delivered H776 their land H3027 out of my hand, H3068 that the LORD H5337 should deliver H3389 Jerusalem H3027 out of my hand?

21 H2790 But they held H2790 their peace, H6030 and answered H1697 him not a word: H4428 for the king’s H4687 commandment H559 was, saying, H6030 Answer him not.

22 H935 Then came H471 Eliakim, H1121 the son H2518 of Hilkiah, H5921 that was over H1004 the household, H7644 and Shebna H5608 the scribe, H3098 and Joah, H1121 the son H623 of Asaph, H2142 the recorder, H2396 to Hezekiah H899 with their clothes H7167 rent, H5046 and told H1697 him the words H7262 of Rabshakeh.
