1 Samuel 4 And the word of Samuel came to all Israel. Now Israel went out against the Philistines to battle, and pitched beside Ebenezer: and the Philistines pitched in Aphek.

1 H1697 And the word H8050 of Samuel H1961 came H3605 to all H3478 Israel. H3478 Now Israel H3318 went H7125 out against H6430 the Philistines H4421 to battle, H2583 and pitched H5921 beside H72 Ebenezer: H6430 and the Philistines H2583 pitched H663 in Aphek.

2 H6430 And the Philistines H6186 put themselves in array H7125 against H3478 Israel: H5203 and when they joined H4421 battle, H3478 Israel H5062 was smitten H6440 before H6430 the Philistines: H5221 and they slew H4634 of the army H7704 in the field H702 about four H505 thousand H376 men.

3 H5971 And when the people H935 were come H413 into H4264 the camp, H2205 the elders H3478 of Israel H559 said, H4100 Why H3068 has the LORD H5062 smitten H3117 us to day H6440 before H6430 the Philistines? H3947 Let us fetch H727 the ark H1285 of the covenant H3068 of the LORD H7887 out of Shiloh H935 to us, that, when it comes H7130 among H3467 us, it may save H3709 us out of the hand H341 of our enemies.

4 H5971 So the people H7971 sent H7887 to Shiloh, H5375 that they might bring H8033 from there H727 the ark H1285 of the covenant H3068 of the LORD H6635 of hosts, H3427 which dwells H3742 between the cherubim: H8147 and the two H1121 sons H5941 of Eli, H2652 Hophni H6372 and Phinehas, H8033 were there H727 with the ark H1285 of the covenant H430 of God.

5 H727 And when the ark H1285 of the covenant H3068 of the LORD H935 came H413 into H4264 the camp, H3605 all H3478 Israel H7321 shouted H1419 with a great H8643 shout, H776 so that the earth H1949 rang again.

6 H6430 And when the Philistines H8085 heard H6963 the noise H8643 of the shout, H559 they said, H4100 What H6963 means the noise H2063 of this H1419 great H8643 shout H4264 in the camp H5680 of the Hebrews? H3045 And they understood H727 that the ark H3068 of the LORD H935 was come H413 into H4264 the camp.

7 H6430 And the Philistines H3372 were afraid, H559 for they said, H430 God H935 is come H413 into H4264 the camp. H559 And they said, H188 Woe H1961 to us! for there has not been H2063 such H865 a thing heretofore.

8 H188 Woe H4310 to us! who H5337 shall deliver H3027 us out of the hand H428 of these H117 mighty H430 Gods? H428 these H430 are the Gods H5221 that smote H4714 the Egyptians H3605 with all H4347 the plagues H4057 in the wilderness.

9 H2388 Be strong H1961 and quit H582 yourselves like men, H6430 O you Philistines, H5647 that you be not servants H5680 to the Hebrews, H582 as they have been to you: quit yourselves like men, H3898 and fight.

10 H6430 And the Philistines H3898 fought, H3478 and Israel H5062 was smitten, H5127 and they fled H376 every man H168 into his tent: H3966 and there was a very H1419 great H4347 slaughter; H5307 for there fell H3478 of Israel H7970 thirty H505 thousand H7273 footmen.

11 H727 And the ark H430 of God H3947 was taken; H8147 and the two H1121 sons H5941 of Eli, H2652 Hophni H6372 and Phinehas, H4191 were slain.

12 H7323 And there ran H376 a man H1144 of Benjamin H4634 out of the army, H935 and came H7887 to Shiloh H1931 the same H3117 day H4055 with his clothes H7167 rent, H127 and with earth H7218 on his head.

13 H935 And when he came, H2009 see, H5941 Eli H3427 sat H3678 on a seat H3197 by the wayside H1870 H6822 watching: H3820 for his heart H2730 trembled H727 for the ark H430 of God. H376 And when the man H935 came H5892 into the city, H5046 and told H3605 it, all H5892 the city H2199 cried out.

14 H5941 And when Eli H8085 heard H6963 the noise H6818 of the crying, H559 he said, H4100 What H6963 means the noise H2088 of this H1995 tumult? H376 And the man H935 came H4116 in hastily, H5046 and told H5941 Eli.

15 H5941 Now Eli H8673 was ninety H8083 and eight H8141 years H1121 old; H5869 and his eyes H6965 were dim, H3201 that he could H7200 not see.

16 H376 And the man H559 said H5941 to Eli, H935 I am he that came H4634 out of the army, H5127 and I fled H3117 to day H4634 out of the army. H559 And he said, H4100 What H1697 is there done, H1121 my son?

17 H1319 And the messenger H6030 answered H559 and said, H3478 Israel H5127 is fled H6440 before H6430 the Philistines, H1961 and there has been H1571 also H1419 a great H4046 slaughter H5971 among the people, H8147 and your two H1121 sons H1571 also, H2652 Hophni H6372 and Phinehas, H4191 are dead, H727 and the ark H430 of God H3947 is taken.

18 H1961 And it came H2142 to pass, when he made mention H727 of the ark H430 of God, H5307 that he fell H5921 from off H3678 the seat H322 backward H3027 by the side H8179 of the gate, H4665 and his neck H7665 broke, H4191 and he died: H2204 for he was an old H376 man, H3513 and heavy. H8199 And he had judged H3478 Israel H705 forty H8141 years.

19 H3618 And his daughter H3618 in law, H6372 Phinehas’ H802 wife, H2030 was with child, H3205 near to be delivered: H8085 and when she heard H8052 the tidings H727 that the ark H430 of God H3947 was taken, H2524 and that her father H2524 in law H376 and her husband H4191 were dead, H3766 she bowed H3205 herself and travailed; H6735 for her pains H2015 came on her.

20 H6256 And about the time H4191 of her death H5324 the women that stood H1696 by her said H3372 to her, Fear H3205 not; for you have born H1121 a son. H6030 But she answered H3808 not, neither H3820 did she regard it.

21 H7121 And she named H5288 the child H350 Ichabod, H559 saying, H3519 The glory H1540 is departed H3478 from Israel: H413 because H727 the ark H430 of God H3947 was taken, H413 and because H2524 of her father H2524 in law H376 and her husband.

22 H559 And she said, H3519 The glory H1540 is departed H3478 from Israel: H727 for the ark H430 of God H3947 is taken.
